Oh goodness I love your work  Self-Taught in particular captures exactly how I feel about the role books have in my lofe and when I saw this it drove me into creation mode. So, I kind of made something similar to this work but different and as a kind of first try in ceramics sort of thing. I just wanted to let you know that your work was one of those things that immediately smashed my head in with feeling and thank you for making this

Hello Matias Sierra,

I love your sculpture entitled “self-taught” and would like to use your concept in a drawing for a website I am creating. Of course I will give you credit for the concept. Would that be okay?

I think this might break the internet when more people see it. I can imagine it being used in all kinds of topics, drawing attention to some insight between how people relate to themselves, to information, to learning... etc. Great job. Not seen anything like this before although I'd be surprised if someone hasn't had a similar idea in the past because it's just so awesome! Fabulous idea, so simple, and yet so thought provoking! I can imagine some Greek philosopher in ages past would have loved this and adopted it in all his work and  teachings.

Wow! first, thank you for the comment.
The picture is already viral. Some examples:

instagram.com/p/2RQxEZP9FA/ (Snoop Dogg)
instagram.com/p/ytXh_On6N4/?mo…
instagram.com/p/zfo4c8xHIW/?mo…

and the list is infinity. But is very hard to find some reference to me in the post. I always try to contact them, some are happy to know me and too to add a reference.

Really I haven't a notion about the magnitude how strong could be for everyone, I know, everyone have a different vision and interpretation.

I ask to my self: Why nobody think this idea before????

TreeWyrm In reply to Matus76 [2015-06-10 06:45:41 +0000 UTC]

It's when I hear things like that where I realise just how sad it is that we haven't got it across to people as they grow up that they should always try to reference. I think sometimes the "proper referencing and citation" methods taught don't help. First of all, we don't learn them until university in the UK (so that doesn't help - more than half the population never goes to university!), and second of all when it *is* taught, it usually just feels like a chore - something you do for work, not a way of living. But it *should* be a way of living: always saying who made something.

I guess it gets very convoluted down the line, like songs that are covered and recovered by different musical artists. The latest artist may not even know that actually, the original was this tune made fifty years ago that has been regurgitated multiple times over. They may only have heard it or known it themselves from the last person who covered it. They might also argue once learning of the other versions that actually, it was that latest one - and only that latest one - that could have inspired them because there was something special about *that one* that made them want to recover it themselves.

I see that on Youtube all the time... the 10 minute videos someone puts together... using other people's funny animal *instances* uploaded individually to FB. But they never reference them. Then someone else combines that video with another, then someone else that one with another... Eventually you have one an hour long... and that becomes the one that gets all the hits on Youtube.

I will try to remember in future if I see your picture, to say "Hey! I know the person who made that! Mention them please!"

I also promise that I will continue to try to inspire people to state the things they use to make stuff. I guess it doesn't matter that we don't constantly cite Alan Turing every time we use a computer to do anything - he's dead, and as for many other contributors to our lives, many may already be successful. But for smaller newer artists, engineers, musicians, sculptors, scientists etc. it is more important. For them, it might make the difference between being able to earn a living or not from their creations.

Exactly like you say. I find my picture of this sculpture where somebody has make some modification like add his name or some phrase, I imagine that person want to be popular with the work of other or like he or she are the owner or whatever. We must think the time we are living, all is now and fast, we must consume, we must be popular for nothing. What is a reference? who is behind that I am sharing? doesn't matter.
Once somebody representing an artist reply to me to send a draw, what???, I asking you to add my name in the post of your artist, The draw is an exchange, my celebrity will give you exposition in his instagram account. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat???? I demanded to her to remove the post.
