It would be many days and nights of travel after leaving the hot jungles of the South that I would come across the first human civilizations that had survived the Great Fall. It was here, in the city of Laodecia, that I met Sophia the blacksmith, the forger of weapons and the slayer of men.

Laodecia's major exports are twofold: steel and gladiators, and Sophia had mastered both crafts. Her youth had been spent in the arenas, where she had become an expert in the paired falcatas. Seventy battles she had one, and twelve men she had slain, and her beauty and her skill had made her a desired bride among the city's men. She had chosen, as her husband, the blacksmith Cassius, who would teach her her second craft, that of the bladesmith. When I first arrived in the city, she had retired from the arena and taken up a life as a smith full-time. Would that she could have lived her peaceful life forever. Sadly, the events after my arrival would cause her need to call upon the first of her professions as well. . .
