It is the 80s but a different 80s...

Ongoing prosperity due to the recession of the 70s being stopped has created an accelerated technological renaissance. Malls are being built everywhere and everyone has the latest 8-track cassette with digital music that displays the tracks and plays full high quality sound though only a few home computers can even hold one song in their memory but give it another ten years... Atari didn't crash and is dominant though many other companies are competing in video games and otherwise. The world is rushing together and Japan is almost openly owning much of California but is welcomed mostly versus being hated for mere economic recovery and competition as it might have been in other worlds.

It is a different 1980s more Samurai and Western. Science fiction took a horrible blow due to the Dune film by Jodorowsky being funded by an anonymous patron rumored to be a time traveler. He also allegedly gave Jodorowsky a computer from fifty years in the future to create special effects impossible for the time. The crew had smashed their equipment after the film was out due to abuse of hallucinogenic substances but the Government was able to seize the parts and look at them and extrapolate it was technology that could be made and so sped up the process. The film was -literally- a RIOT and caused a backlash that set back science fiction and fantasy in film for a decade or more but also the investigation to try to find the money and see if it was used for some kind of tax scam ended up exposing some existing frauds and con-artists with high political reach. The "Tax massacre" made it so a former actor now playing president got to choose a different person as his VP and strangely no assassination attempt happened. The end result was emergency restructuring softened the econmic blow in the 70s. There still is science fiction and fantasy but more confined to "Geek" niches and Heavy metal though Atari still supports the "Adventure" franchise now in part 3 Beyond the Black Castle but the latest hot holographic game is Boot Hill of blocky voxel hologram cowboys shooting indians and each other.

Neon Malls dominate and compete in every major city. The Malls have their own vigilante protectors; Mall Ninjas - trained by Dojos in the stores and equipped by the recruiting stores with intellectual and late punk era kids learning ancient wisdom and using modern mass produced gear. They are the bane to the rowdy the vandals the pick-pockets and shoplfiters but sometimes also wage ninja wars with other malls and silly 'anti-consumerist' activists trying to halt progress.

In this world there are those who seek some kind of adventure in these changing times versus mere prosperity or pleasure.
And thus there are new Samurai who seek justice and honor even if they have no direct connection to Japan or the Mall Ninjas. Somehow the "Bushi" spirit can transcend nationality, race, class and emerge in lone individuals either seeking something new or to restart from rock bottom.

They are the Neon Samurai...
