I maaaaay have gotten carried away with the background… so earlier versions here:

The idea was: an alternate ending (since I’m sure whatever the finale has in store will be much better and far more satisfying.) where the strap perpetually crossed over Ford’s chest was attached to an ancient scroll which contained an incantation and the power to bind an immortal being to a mortal body. He kept it with him at all times, not so much to ensure its safety, but in case he needed to use it. It was part one of a last resort, if the worst happened and no other solutions worked. Part two was what he was hiding under his sweater, an array of purification tattoos. The plan was that he’d bind Bill to his body and the tattoos would naturally destroy them both.

This is a lot more complicated in my head and does involve the cipher circle and journals and also explains why Bill was keeping certain people alive, why he wanted the journals destroyed so badly, why time travel wouldn’t fix things (not that it wouldn’t in canon because it very well could play into things in a big way but for the sake of this alternate ending, it’s because if Ford wasn’t Bill’s pawn, he would have found someone else and at least Ford was willing to do something to end things once and for all - basically that things needed to get some degree of worse so an overall better, safer world could emerge and this was the least horrible version of what could have been), and also addresses the town’s barrier… but alas, creative things rarely are simple for me…
