Unconventional Harpies - Snowy Owl

I went to start this year's realistic bird piece but thought I should warm up first aaaaaaand I accidentally drew another harpy. W...Whoops...?

As much as all of the attention is on the male snowy owls for being so pure white and pretty, I knew I'd get super bored colouring pure white. Colouring the white with the speckles was almost too bland as is. But I had a lot of fun with the texture and speckle patterns and incorporating it into different areas.

As for the background, I've always loved the look of the Aurora Borealis but I can't seem to figure out how to colour it with Copics. Even looking up online I haven't seen other people render it in a way I find really captures it. The aurora just seems to be outside of alcohol markers' capacity. (Watercolor and digital, though, yield great results.) That said, this is my favourite recreation I've done so far. After that I threw in some mountains for good measure. Not my best landscape, but this was supposed to be a warm up doodle, so I can't complain too much.

Shoutout to Vee for suggesting the wood grain for the background. I had no idea what to do but didn't want to leave it white but if I coloured it black the branch would disappear (still mostly does but shhhhhhh). It was exactly what it needed.

Let's see if I can actually accomplish the work I'm supposed to be doing now.

Done with Copic markers on Rendr paper with a bit of Polychromos for texture.
