Description For fellow Australian friends and [almost here] (who I'll educate yet )  And Sweet Cher too

An assortment of leaves, nuts and other items fallen from trees that I've collected on my walks this week.  On Monday we walked 10 kms (6 miles), Wednesday 7 kms, and today (Friday) 8 kms.  I think that's enough exercise for one week  If you have any questions about the items let me know and I'll do my best to answer  The yellow flowers are not naturally dried (as everything else is) but the parrots break them off the trees.  I have this 'basket' on my coffee table as a display right now.  The bowl is actually turned from grasstree (foreground of thumb below) wood and was turned by my grandfather.

It's a lovely arrangement of different colors and textures. What is the item on the bottom right? It looks like a pinecone with really bad sores.

Thanks Tricia, I'm so pleased you like it.  I was expecting someone to ask about that and have been surprised how long it took.  Love your description of it - very true!!!  It's a banksia nut, which is what we end up with after the flower 'petals' (tendrils?) fall off and it dries over about the next 12 months or so.  This is what a banksia flower looks like, and they come in various colours through yellow, orange and heading towards red.

        and as they dry

ShipperTrish In reply to MayEbony [2014-03-23 04:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the explanation. I would have never guessed that's what it was. I actually hesitated to ask because I wasn't sure if I was the only person who didn't know what it was. I even scrolled down the comments trying to see if someone had already asked about it first. Anyway, I'm glad I asked (I always love to learn something new everyday) and thank you for sharing both the beautiful photograph and your knowledge.

MayEbony In reply to ShipperTrish [2014-03-23 05:14:23 +0000 UTC]

That's OK Trish.  I'm as sure as I can be that they only grow in Australia so you had no way of knowing.  I think there are many uniquely things in there so it's not a problem at all.  Perhaps you're The One who should be given a bravery award  Banksia trees are really rampant around here - definitely a staple of the natural bush, along with the grass trees.  They only grow to about 12 feet high at the absolute most.

I love learning too, it's really exciting I think

ShipperTrish In reply to MayEbony [2014-03-23 22:05:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I hardly think myself brave in any situation, so thank you for saying that.

An Australian endemic plant, even better. Australia is one of the places I wish to visit someday, so it's awesome to learn about uniquely Australian things like this.

May, WOW [Woman's Own Wonderfulness] factor at play here, total awesomeness, thanks for this!!! It's a great selection of items after that great walking, could it be called a pot pourri, not sure? BTW, we have those yellow flowers on this side of the world too, they're nice, sometimes so yellow, sometimes quite green coloured...

MayEbony In reply to viteaz [2014-03-22 07:42:21 +0000 UTC]

Aaawwww what a beautiful comment, thank you so much!  Pot pourri sounds like a good description, though I think strictly they are perfumed and this isn't, but yeah, sounds good to me!

Do you get the red, pink, orange and white flowers like this as well as the yellow?  They're lovely aren't they?  And I enjoy watching the stages of development too - how they literally burst forth after pushing the little caps off.

viteaz In reply to MayEbony [2014-03-22 09:00:08 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure... No, I don't think I've seen the pink, or the other colours, at all. Mind you, I've lived in Brisbane a long time & never noticed the green ones until a year or so ago when I started doing photos, so none so blind as me who will not see!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MayEbony In reply to viteaz [2014-03-22 09:53:18 +0000 UTC]

None so blind as a non-photographer or non-artist I think.  I thought I'd always been keenly aware of nature, but I see it anew these days!  This white one had fallen from the tree and landed on a cushion of moss, and here's a darker pink.  I'll have to watch for the other colours.  I haven't seen green so will try to keep an eye out.  We probably have them here too.

Yes, not truly green, but less yellow than some, perhaps! You're moving into the semi-professional attitude it seems, always looking at life through the prism, don't like something & the shutter[s] just come down [comment adapted from my personal reflections of life as a camera, which I just made up [which is why it's so bad]]...

MayEbony In reply to viteaz [2014-03-24 02:18:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh thank you,   Sweetheart. 'Semi-professional' sounds like a very great compliment to me.  I've sold 2 greeting cards with my photos on the front through RedBubble and cried with joy so perhaps I am on my way LOL  You keep at the personal reflections Poppet  I've made up 2 jokes in my life, can you bear to hear them?
Men like being nagged or they'd do as they're told the first time!  And...
What noise do piglets make?  "Oinklet, oinklet!!!"
Are you sorry you know me yet?

viteaz In reply to MayEbony [2014-03-24 04:20:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, p-lease, the man jokes... made up? There must be something in the air at your place??? but, really I like the nagging joke, it's funny, & it contradicts one that's always worried me: Q: Why do men die before their wives? A: They want to. I'm ignoring the piglet joke, and here, just in case you feel like telly more, take this & apply until that need goes away, it's oinkment! Anyway, why're you so chipper at the moment, 'cos you're running again, life looking good, won goldlotto? Redbubble looks cool, I think there's a particular delight in having your art 'recognised' as you have, I understand why you're delighted. I've sold one print on dA, & the photo of the books you commented on has been used on the internet a couple of times as the image associated with some academic articles about books, & research...

MayEbony In reply to viteaz [2014-03-28 09:10:37 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't think that man 'joke' can be argued with so I reckon it's a Great Truth myself.  By the same token there's a woman joke.  Why do women wear make up and perfume?

Because they're ugly and they stink.  Looking at it without emotion I don't see that this can be argued with either, can you?

Aahhh yes, I've heard that men want to die first, but if they'd just do as they're told their lives would be pure joy - you know that don't you?

No, not running again yet.  After a total break for 8 weeks I may as well keep up the fast/distance walking until the weather cools down and then see what happens.  Extra time for full healing isn't a bad thing either.

Yes, it was a true thrill to make a sale.  They don't tell you who made the purchase but I guessed because it was made in Canadian $$$ and it was a dear friend from on here Gigi50  That's awesome about your print - which one?  And the books photo too - congratulations!

Oinkment for ailing pigs.  Uh huh  And sick birds?  Why tweetment of course

I feel I've suddenly stumbled into a quicksand type swamp, where if I say something, anything, anything at all, it will mean, in a stream of consciousness devoid of meaning, or meaningful meaning, that fetid water will flood my mouth so any attempt to speak will then be rendered un-intelligible [so what's new, she thinks], even allowing that something intelligible might have proceeded, from, as it were, my mouth to your ears! The work that sold was the one below, a work that baffles me somewhat. It is my second most faved, & commented on work, yet it was just a simple shot with a smartphone on a run in the local forest one day... I suspect though, it'll be my only sale, although the parrot has had over a 100 downloads, so... BTW, we gotta stop all these doggone jokes... they qualify as jokes? Yours would, mine? Go on, be kind, just sorta nod... OK, mood moment here, I'm imagining your head, like one of those things they used to have in the back of cars, nodding, noodling, noddy, nods off, nod~~~

I should print out your first paragraph and use it as my personal warning to all who interact with me past the point of 'g'day, how are you?'  You've summed it up very nicely and it's a state that I enjoy between myself and male friends (of the ilk that understand me well).  It's never quite as fun with female friends, for reasons I can't explain.  You know, I found out a lot about myself when I worked (with roughly weekly visits to their office) with a person named Chris.  I knew them for about a year, and never did discover their gender.  To start with it left me feeling a little uncomfortable; which was my problem, not theirs.  And then I realised that I treat men and women differently and that the discomfort was through not knowing which 'treatment' to give in this situation.  I presume I'm not unusual to treat men and women differently?  I feel that I can be more open with men - that there's no undercurrent, no risk of being misconstrued - but that may have everything to do with my upbringing rather than who I would have been otherwise.

That's awesome about your photo.  It's beautiful.  The stats on it are incredible - over 4,000 views *and* Faves and many downloads.  And the sale, of course!  Have you only just put the 'sell download for points' on it?  I don't allow the free download on mine, though of course right-click-save-as is always there for anyone.  Hopefully that doesn't give them much in the line of quality.  By the same token I have watermarks and wouldn't deface my art with one.  One of the people I watch has lovely photos but they're all defaced with a massive watermark so I don't fave those that I would otherwise.

Of course they're jokes.  If we both laughed then they qualify - in my opinion.  You did laugh... didn't you?  I did.
ha ha this one's even called mayanod   But my favourite
