Description A 'just for fun' shot of my two grand-daughters dancing on the beach as the sun was setting.

I'd had them down there dressed in Minnie Mouse outfits for a photo shoot for a Reading Themed Photographic Competition at my local library. The library runs the amateur photographic club that I belong to and is showcasing our work whilst also promoting the National Year of Reading for next year in Australia.

Beauty of a dove,
Integrity of owl,
Courage of the mouse,
The silence in a growl.

Sweet innocence,
And darling mind,
I stare in to these bambi eyes,
Of what may come is that of the past,
I beg of you, spare me to last.

Love me darlin divine,

Bless me with innocence,
Tell me no such lies.

Thank you so much dear Stephanie. I was very pleased with it for a split-second snap with no planning. I was just messing around, confirming what I'd read on how to get a silhouette shot.

Vielen liebe Dank liebe Malou

Yes, this was at a beach called Mullaloo - not very far from my home. It's a lovely safe beach as the waves are always very small, a good place for children to swim.

What a funny shot! These are the silhouettes my latest sunset pic is lacking! --> [link]

It's always good to have something nice in the foreground, and your grand-daughters are very pretty.

Dank sehr liebe Stefan. Your photo is lovely. Glad I wasn't on there because I get sea sick, but it's nice to look at from the stability of my office chair LOL

We don't like travelling by ship so much either, but the sea was really quite. So we had a good journey and could sleep well in our cabin.

It was a very nice and comfortable ferry, especially their dinner and breakfast buffets were great.

Oh, how interesting! How long (in time) is the journey?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MisterKrababbel In reply to MayEbony [2011-09-20 13:28:21 +0000 UTC]

It took us 15 hours, from 6 pm to 9 am the following day, so we had enough time for dinner and breakfast.

Gracious! I had never realised Ireland was quite that far away. Oh, thank goodness my parents only took me across the Channel each year, I was sick enough for that short distance

MisterKrababbel In reply to MayEbony [2011-09-20 15:07:53 +0000 UTC]

The Channel was rough last week when we crossed it with our students. They realized how long one and a half hours can be.

Ireland is only two hours away from Wales or Scotland, but we took the ferry from the Netherlands.

That Channel felt about 5 hours long to me each year as well LOL I used to get a bit car sick too, but definitely and badly sea sick. I have a damaged left ear so we think that's probably the reason. I have to be fully dosed up well ahead of time to get on a plane too, yet I love to fly!

Oh wow, no wonder it took so long on the Irish ferry then!

I'm sorry to hear that. But at least you do travel by ship and plane.

One of my colleague's husband refuses to go by train, coach, ship and plane. The only "safe" vehicle for him is his own car.

They've never gone on holiday abroad, since he hates long car rides as well.

That sounds like paranoia, doesn't it? And I feel very sorry for my colleague who teaches French. Her only chances to get to France are students' exchanges once a year. But there she's responsible for her students and doesn't have much spare time. What a dilemma.

Travelling belongs to the best things in our lives. Since there are school holidays in all four seasons, we make a lot of use of it.

Our next destination will be Istanbul / Turkey in October.

Oh your poor colleague! Sounds as if her husband may have some nervous issues to me.

And you are right, going with students is not the same as a personal holiday!

I was sick for 3 days and 3 nights on the ship from England to Australia but was then fine no matter how rough it got - and it did! That was the only cruise over 1½ hours I ever went on.

Wow, Turkey sounds wonderful. I do hope you have a fantastic time!

We used to have a 3-term system here but it's been 4 now for about 20 years. Our long holiday is late December to early February of course, and gives the children plenty of time to play with their Christmas presents

Having summer holidays after Christmas is a weird idea for German kids.

Our school holidays are two weeks in February, one week after Easter, six weeks in July and August, two weeks in October, and usually 12 days for Christmas and New Year.

That's one of the best things with being a teacher, btw.

MayEbony In reply to MisterKrababbel [2011-09-21 12:05:39 +0000 UTC]

I bet it would be weird. It did take me a couple of years to get used to Christmas being hot. I think my Mum is still getting there LOL

Christmas holidays are usually 8 weeks and then 2 weeks plus a couple of days for the other 3 breaks.

I know all about teachers getting holidays. I used to work 48 weeks a year in a school office and see them going while I still had to warm my office chair LOL

I guess working at a school office is only bearable during the school holidays.

I really admire our two office ladies for their patience and friendliness. I don't know how many times per hour they get disturbed with their work by students and teachers.

MayEbony In reply to MisterKrababbel [2011-09-23 12:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh, not at all. The school holidays were good for about 2 days - long enough to take a long, leisurely lunch as an entire admin staff which was something we could never do normally. The leisurely part, nor the entire group together! Then it got too quiet in a big hurry.

I adored the teachers/academics and students very much and thrived on the interaction.
