Description My 2nd try at Chinese ink/watercolor painting. @@ The tree trunk turned out darker than I wanted.

Edited in photoshop to make it presentable online.
I gave up on writing on my pieces.... I tried and screwed up. I will need more practice before i figure out how to make it look right.

that's really nice. it has depth. composition is also exciting.
maybe you must take care of your brush. it must contain the gradient.
i learned it on a weekend workshop. so don't be angry of me. i beginned with this painting only newly.

ah the little man, a lone weary traveller seeking shade under this majestic towering pine?
I like your blend of media (if that is indeed how you went about it)
There's a real sense of natures power behind this, nice

The feeling in this is beautiful. I think you've done a marvelous job on both the tree and the person ^^
I love the crispness of the image too.. which makes me think I really should put some contrast on my calligraphy pieces to make them "presentable" online too heh

mayshing In reply to le-coeur-brise [2004-10-19 15:28:11 +0000 UTC]

hee, yeah, presentation is quite important... for example, I do scan the calligraphy pieces in color even though they are in black ink, the ink itself has some warmth, and the rice paper has a tone... then they look much better online than pure gray, since they weren't pure gray anyway. In some cases where the paper is cool color, I just do gray scale scan, since it doesn't make much difference.
Look forward to see more from u. ^^

This is brilliant. Maybe you would have wanted the tree to be more subtle, but it looks good this way too. Kind of imposing.

My art teacher a few years back told me that anime and manga isn't art. Its design. and people who draw such are designers. However this has so much soul, so much beauty! This is wonderful!!! Certainly proves her wrong.

not art?!! HOW CAN ANYONE CALLED A DESIGN NOT ART!!? O_O All the graphic designers will bash her (I am double major in graphic design and fine arts.... and both are counted as majors in: Fine arts Degree.

Designs is art in practical use. Fine arts is art for living space. Thats my defination of them.

@@ I am used to people bashing this type of art I am doing... so it's not a surprise for me to see her put it down, but calling a design not art? She is outdated.

This is so beautiful! I really love how the tree turned out, especially the fact that you can see the bark and the details on it. I really like how you used a watered down effect to create the sense of space (area behind the tree mostly). Great great job

see, this is where ur Artist really shows. sure we are all artists, but most of us just draw and color, or cg (which is just coloring with a mouse). u are a true artist, u do all kinds of art, watercolors, color pencils, cg, everything and then some. this is great. a great mix of watercolor and ink. good job!

That's a very interesting contrast between the outlined figure and dark pine tree - I don't know how you intended it to be but I'm not sorry at all it turned out that dark. I'm just wondering whether more sharp edges and less watery strokes would make this look cleaner in a way, although the rather blurry tree does work well with the simple figure, as mentioned. The composition and shape are very successful in my opinion. Oh, I'm sorry I had to add my comment on top of the others that you apparently have to read, but eh, it's not like it's my fault that you're so great

I really love how the tree turned out. LOL Dark is my style man. Anyways, I understand you put the little human there as to let us see how huge the tree is. I however, think taht the human poses as a distraction. His style isn't quite like the tree itself, and sorta becomes a yellow fish in a mass of black ones. You get what I mean? I hope you don't take this personally or anything, I'm just getting my input. Wonderful traditional style though, as usual.

usually human are drawn out of the rest of the styles like that. ^^ So its intended.
Perhaps i shouldn't have added him, but it felt so empty down there... XD

I really like this one. A good sense of size and scale is easily presentable which is very appealing. I've always loved size implemented into pictures like this. The character is well drawn as well, though he seems not to fit with the overall style of the piece. However, he does fit with the composition as contrasted to the tree. The tree is very well done, it has the appeal of old traditional styles.

Wow that's really great. I really love your traditional chinese works. Why did u leave out the writing? The calligraphic characters are an art in themselves therefore to get them right u need to practice 'em!

I had the writing on it, but I took it out because the placement is horrible and destroyed my painting.... =_= Don't worry, I will keep practicing in the dark until i have something decent to show.
