I like like the soft focus of the shirt on the right side of the photo and the angle, as well as the shadowing effect. Awesome composition.

I thought this was Ashton Kutchur from the thumb. A compliment for professional studio photography, quite possibly and insult to Jonathan depending on his opinions of him.
My point: great shot!

Excelent colours, superb definition and I really like how his face is quite focused in contrast to the rest of his body...

No, it's a mini-4x5 camera that you can tilt the lens to accentuate/manipulate depth of field.

one of the best portraits i've seen ... this is just incredible. the only critisism I have is the bluriness on his left shoulder area ... i personally think it would have been flawless without that. either man .. this portrait is amazing .. nice work.

Beautiful shot... The tones of wonderful, with the general colouring of the photograph making a wonderful contrast with the subject's pale skin.
Just wondering out of curiosity... how much of the differenctial focus effect was acheived in camera using a wide aperture, and how much of it was acheived in Photoshop?
I love using my f1.8 lens for a differential focus effect like this, but I've also been experimenting with Photoshop for acheiving a similar effect for those times when I don't have the f1.8 lens with me... but only with partial success.

Absolutely none of my work is edited digitally like this ... everything is always done either in camera, or in the darkroom.
The focus effect was created entirely in the camera - I was using a view camera (similar to a 4x5), and you can change the planes of focus by careful tilting of the lens. This was tilted, and my aperture was f5.6.
I only ever use photoshop of colour correction, and minor cropping.

I suppose I just see Photoshop as another part of my toolset... sometime I create effects in camera, sometimes in Photoshop, more often a combination of the two... its all just part of complex pallet of tools and I use what ever tools are at my disposal to achieve my vision. I suppose it seems a shame to rule out an important and creative set of tools purely on principle.
Having said all that, I simply don't have access the kind of sophisticated camera with tilt and shift movements it turns out you have used here (I admit it... I'm jealous!!)

I see ... while I definately agree that some fabulous things can be done digitally, I find that the camera/darkroom process just has too much for me to start exploring digital just yet ... I'll wait until the technology has completely surpassed analog before I start to play with it - I find that people swarm to digital options far too much because it's easier, or cheaper, but the results are rarely worth the ease, or the price drop.
I'm seriously not talking about your work, I've always like how you use digital ... it's really quite gorgeous.
