Cetaceans of Meridia manged to evolve and diversify in a time when large marine reptiles were still slowly recovering from the Meridian equivalent of the KT extinction event, which was nowhere near as extreme as it was in our world (It pretty much wiped out dinosaurs in the Northern Hemisphere, left only small, relic populations alive in the Southern Hemisphere and almost wiped out large marine reptiles entirely).

Dolphins are common throughout the known world and are found in great numbers in the Meridian Sea where their likeness is used as a symbol for Arcoria, an island nation that has fished, traded and made war across the Meridian Sea for thousands of years. Arcorian vessels often feature Dolphin figureheads and or symbols painted on the hull or sails.

River Dolphins dwell in the River Zheng, one of the largest river systems in Meridia, a stark white variety is particularly well known.

Dolphins behave as they do in our world, living in pods, hunting mostly fish and squid using echolocation.

In some regions Dolphins may actually assist fishermen by driving fish into their nets and then sharing in the bounty.

There are also stories about Dolphins rescuing shipwrecked sailors, helping them to shore and other stories of Dolphins fighting off Sharks and Sea Dragons to protect humans in the water. This behavior, if true, is unexplained.

Dolphins are preyed upon by Sharks, Leviathans and Blackfish as well as Sea Dragons, though they are usually fast enough to evade Sea Dragons which are only capable of short bursts of speed, those that do fall prey to them are usually already injured, sick, cornered or the victim of a successful ambush.
