Nova Trek is a parallel universe Star Trek.Β There are differences between the two. The series starts here:
Not all of the stories that happened in Star Trek happened in Nova Trek and the ones that do happen, won't go the same way. Check out this write up. It gives a pretty neat feel for things:

Very cool!Β What's your email?Β I'll send you my own manuscripts, including one still in progress....
I Β also did a full Nova Class Tech Manual, but can't figure out how to post it onto Deviantart...I think the site keeps rejecting it because the file's too big!Β

Try saving it for the Web instead of using the original pages. That what I did with Nova Trek and it created much smaller files. I'll send you a note with my e-mail but I can't promise when I'll get a chance to read anything. Right now, I'm in the middle of building the ship and other props I need for my next series: Dillion.

I'm afraid I don't have the time. Between work and my stories, there's never enough in the day.

I'm glad you decided to keep her too. It certainly was different, but definitely in a good way. I could see the Guardian of Forever doing something like this for just this kind of reason.

When I was thinking about keeping the freighter captain, I got wondering "Where else could I use her?" Assignment:Yesterday would never have happened, Timespot would never have happened, There really was no place for her. Tam, on the other hand just seem to fit right in from the start.

It also helps set her up as her own person and not a copy of Jan. I've already made it clear- I hope- in both the graphic novels and in "Timespot" that she's been hopping back and forth between the 20th and 23rd centuries. All of her civilian clothes are 2oth century. She's had to make choices and decisions in the face of situations that Jan never had to deal with at her age. This "Present day" is a whole new world for her with ideas and concepts that Jan would never have dreamed of at 18.
Thinking about it, you have to wonder if, given the choice, of staying in her own timeline- her own world- and dealing with the mess Finney made of her life, or leaving everything- her whole world, behind and starting over, would Tam have chosen to come into Jan's timeline ? I think, she's wide-eyed enough to have said "yes".
See that's another thing about Tam. Even under these conditions- basically starting her life over- we're seeing a shadow- an echo- of what Jan was like when she was 18. Now 34, Jan has 16 years of life calming her down and guiding her reactions that Tam doesn't have yet.
I think it makes an interesting contrast- almost a before and after. We see Jan as she was and Tam as she might someday be.

I can see why. There's not too many places where a civilian freighter Captain, and a Starfleet Starship Captain could 'bump' into each other, even on purpose, much less on accident.
I think it helps that the Guardian gave Tam that little bit of extra help when it slowed her aging down, and gave her that time traveling ability. Both of those 'gifts' help to allow Tam to be anywhere at anytime, which lends itself to all kinds of story ideas, especially 'Assignment:Yesterday'.

Still like the concept behind Tam

It was a toss up what to do with her. At one point, I'd plan on keeping the freighter captain and letting her go her way- with her and Jan crossing paths on occation. But the more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea. Then I decided on Tam.
