Description Here's the finished 1983: Doomsday map based on the Alpine Confederation ( [link] ), which also happened to be the backdrop for those recent stories ( [link] ).

In addition to a brief profile, there were some liberties made in this interpretation such as the renamed Territories, partly due to the source material not having much in the way of accurate maps (and also to make them less cumbersome to pronounce). Still, hopefully this keeps to the spirit of the original as much as possible. Also, you may notice that the Swiss and Austrian boundaries have changed, reflecting their expansion as the initial chaos subsided.

----

Established at its present from in 1997, the Alpine Confederation has emerged as the leading and most stable power in the wastelands that had been Central-Western Europe. Owing to its largely intact nature, it is also home to the regional headquarters of the reconstituted League of Nations, located in Geneva. The official capital is Vaduz (Liechtenstein), though power is shared with Bern (Switzerland) and Linz (Austria).

Apart from the Genocide of Vienna, the present Confederation's core, constituent "statelets," (Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) largely escaped the nuclear war that erupted on 26 September 1983, scorching large parts of the world in atomic fire; it would later be known as "Doomsday." Yet despite their relative luck, the chaos surrounding those nations soon brought them almost to the breaking point. By 1984, the Swiss and surviving Austrians forged what came to be known as the Austro-Swiss Union.

The initial years was marked by rationing, food shortages, upheavals, epidemics of radiation sickness and significant military action as refugees and bandits alike threatened to overwhelm the Alpine countries, though they were (forcibly) pushed back with a vengeance. Still, they persevered. Economic and socio-political stability was gradually restored as conditions improved. And until the Prussian Expedition in 1994, they would see themselves as the last bastion of civilization on Earth.

By the mid-late 1990s, the Alpines (as the nations called themselves) had expanded their territories and influence into the surrounding survivor states and communities in what had been France, Italy and Germany. At that point, the three countries were both distinctly independent yet closely knit to one another, reflective of the shared experience of Doomsday. Indeed the system already in place reflected a combination of the unique Austrian and Swiss models, which is still used today. But it was only after Liechtenstein was formally welcomed into the Union in 1997 that the Confederation took on its current form.

Today, despite upholding the very same neutrality that saved it from the bombs, the union stands poised as a potential political player in Europe. Beyond its official borders, it "supervises" an alliance of Survivor Nations in northern Italy based in Venice and San Marino (which detractors deride as glorified puppet states), Alpine forces policing the lands around them; coincidentally, their actions are intended to counter Fascist/Mafia-controlled Sicily and its plans to control all of the Italian wastes. Closer to home, the statelets have supported the various Territories and Special Regions, with Bavaria (or what's left of it after the destruction of Munich) being the closest to attaining statelet status. Austrians and Hungarian remnants, meanwhile, continue persisting on a proper exploration and resettlement of western Hungary, fully backed by the Confederation and based from Sopron. But with the Sicilian question still in the air and the frontiers to the "Hungarian wastes" still looming with security concerns, only time will tell.

As a disclaimer, I don't own 1983: Doomsday, which belongs to its respective owners.

That said, any and all critiques are welcome!

Not to make a spoilsport, but Bergamo is outside the boundaries.

Nice map anyway!

Oh wow looks cool, and I live there XD

But why is Landshut and not MΓΌnchen the capital of Bavaria?

Btw, I have not time enough to read thru the whole story, could you explain in a few sentences what happened? I know there was a nuclear war (doomsday) right?

Oh and it would be in German: Sicherheitsbezirk Pressburg^^

Well, in the original source timeline, a nuclear war erupted in 1983 between the Americans/NATO and Soviets/Warsaw Pact. Then for two hours everything escalated until large chunks of the world was either nuked or ravaged by war. Munich happened to be destroyed by a nuke and the surviving Bavarians congregated around Landshut.

Oh fuck, I live not too far away from Munich XD Omg no my beloved city is nuked? XD

Ok Landshut is also beautiful, but what will be the death-zone around Munich? How many kilometers will it make that place unliveable?

I'm not sure. But by the time Bavaria is basically back to some semblance of functional civilization, it was pretty much under the strange neutral threesome of Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein (aka the "Alpine Confederation").
