Description I've wanted to do some fanart of this guy for quite a while now. And with no further delay, here's my very first drawing of him. As far as records go, Wolf O'Donnell is without a doubt one of my top favorite Starfox characters in the entire franchise. In fact, ever since he was first introduced to the series back in the late 90s, he has since gained a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. One reason being because he acts as the rival of Fox McCloud in every game he's appeared in including in his latest appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playable character. The second reason being because as his first name implies, he's a wolf. And like all fictional wolves, he possesses this unexplainable magnetic charm that has that ability to draw you to him.

Wolf O'Donnell was originally going to appear in the unreleased Starfox 2, which unfortunately never saw the light of day. Fortunately however, he was not discarded from the series like all the ill fated characters were as the makers of the Starfox series had other plans for him. As all Starfox fans know by now, Wolf O'Donnell made his official debut appearance in 1997 with the release of the popular and highly acclaimed Starfox 64. He is the leader of the Starwolf team; a renegade squadron of bounty hunters who were hired by Emperor Andross to defeat the Starfox team. But they failed and have since sworn revenge for their own personal reasons. Their signature vehicle is the Wolfen; a highly proficient and maneuverable space craft which is similar to the Arwing used by Team Starfox, but is somewhat more advanced, has a more detailed design, and outclasses the Arwing in several instances. Wolf's team consisted of three other members including Leon Powalski, his right-hand man, Andrew Oikonny, the nephew of Andross, and Pigma Dengar, who is a former member of the Starfox team. From Starfox 64 onwards, Pigma was kicked out of the team for his greed and selfishness, and has since been replaced with Panther Caroso.

In Starfox 64, Wolf O'Donnell spoke with a British accent and is most credited for three of his most famous quotes: "Can't let you do that, Starfox!", "You're good! But I'm better!", and "Playtime's over, Starfox!". One of his other most famous quotes is "I'll be the one to take you down!" which he says in one of his victory poses in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In Starfox 64, he was voiced by Rick May in English, and by Hisao Egawa in Japanese. In the English version of Starfox Assault, he was voiced by Grant Goodeve. In the English version of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, he was voiced by Jay Ward. And in the Japanese versions of both games, he was voiced by Mahito Oba.

Like all the other characters in the series, Wolf O'Donnell's appearance differs from game to game. In the unreleased Starfox 2, he originally had a more sinister face, yellow eyes with red pupils, and a scar which was located over a damaged right eye. In Starfox 64, we only see his face in transmission screens. But two of his most notable facial features included him having dark gray fur, red eyes, and an eye-patch which covers his left eye. It is unknown as to how Wolf lost his left eye as his back-story was never explained or explored even 13 years after his debut appearance. Along with that, his hatred towards Fox is never fully explained either. However, we do see a little bit more of Wolf in the Starfox 64 manga, which was also released in 1997. Although we never really see his full body anywhere in the comic, we do see a vague instance of him wearing what appears to be a brown trench-coat, and later a yellow jumpsuit. Now, I found the trench-coat to be more suiting to him. However, I did not like the yellow jumpsuit at all.

In recent years, Wolf O'Donnell's design has changed dramatically since his first appearance. In Starfox Assault and Command, he wears an entirely unique uniform which is mostly black in color, with blue body armor for his chest, and a pair of shoulder pads which is kind of a bronze sort of color and is mounted over his head and shoulders as a single garment. He now speaks with a deep gruff American accent, and was also given a mechanical eye-piece which has since replaced his eye-patch. It's never stated on what specific functions the mechanical eye-piece has. But it is believed that it enhances the sight on his left eye, and gives him certain advantages like camera and computer-like properties.

As I've mentioned before, Wolf O'Donnell was included into "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" as a playable character. However, he must be unlocked before the player can have access to him. His fighting style in the game is essentially a combination between feral bestial attacks and a few acrobatic martial-arts moves. He often fights with his razor sharp claws to scratch his opponents with. But that's not all he can do; he also fights with a series of hard hitting punches and kicks, and uses a customized laser gun which is mounted with a blade on the front. The blast emitted from his gun is slower than Fox and Falco's gun shots, but does considerably more damage. Wolf's move-set is similar to Fox and Falco's, having basically the same moves such as a light-speed dashing attack, a fire-based attack, and a reflector which reflects projectiles back at opponents. Now, these similarities are forgivable, seeing as each character's special moves differs from each other in terms of each character having their own variation of each move. However, my only complaint so far is that Wolf was given the exact same final smash that Fox and Falco were given which is essentially a Land-Master tank. Now, with this in mind, you'd think they could have given a different final smash move for all three characters. Because well, a Land-Master for all three characters takes away from their originality. Besides, how did Team Starwolf gain access to the Land-Masters in the first place? But I guess it doesn't matter that much as long as Wolf is playable and enjoyable. And in my honest opinion, Wolf is lots of fun to play as because he's a pretty tough fighter, and is one of the best players in the game. Besides, with the exception of his final smash, his fighting style is actually quite unique. And his taunts in the game are some of the best. Two of my favorite taunts that he does is when he performs a series of kicks while saying "What's the matter? Scared?", and when he howls in an animalistic voice while assuming a dynamic pose. And speaking of poses, Wolf makes some of the sexiest and most dynamic poses in the game. In fact, he's got real talent in posing.

However, there are a few things I disagree with about Wolf's current design. One thing that I noticed was that his red eyes which he had since Starfox 64 have been replaced with purple eyes. Now personally, I think he looked much better with red eyes because it made him look more menacing and intimidating. But I don't like the way he looks with purple eyes very much because it just doesn't look right. Another strange thing I noticed is that Wolf's fur color tends to change as well. He's usually gray in color. But in Brawl he appears to be gray with a tint of blue. I'm not sure if that’s his actual color or if it's the lighting in certain stages, but his fur tends to change from a bluish gray to a dark gray depending on the scenery. But in some of the fanart that I've seen of him, he appears to be way too blue. Last but not least, I also noticed that Wolf's size seems to change as well. In some depictions, he appears to be relatively the same size as Fox. While in other depictions he appears to be slightly taller than Fox. Quite frankly, I always imagined Wolf being taller than Fox. Because as his name suggests, he's a wolf. And wolves are bigger than foxes. I always imagined Fox to be about 5'3, while Wolf on the other hand would probably stand at least 6 feet in height. I'm not trying to get people to agree with me on anything. But I'm just saying that in my opinion, Wolf should be gray, his eyes should be either red or yellow, and he should be taller than Fox. But again, that's just my opinion. Others may beg to differ.

Since his initial appearance, fans have known Wolf O'Donnell to be a pretty vicious and one-dimensional villain whose only goal in life is to vengeance against Fox McCloud for his own personal reasons. In fact, since the first few years fans have known him, he seemed to be downright evil. However, as of Starfox Assault, Wolf has displayed a side of him which we never knew existed in him. In fact, sometime during middle of the game, he deliberately saves Fox from falling to his death by catching him on one of the wings of his Wolfen while Fox was attacked by the Apparoids. However, he claims to have done this only so that he could kill Fox himself one day. But seeing as he pretty much had the chance to do so at that given moment, it's obvious that he clearly hesitated either because he was not in the mood, or because he had a slight change of heart. In fact, due to the circumstances in Assault with Fox and Wolf teaming up with each other, it's become clear to me that Wolf is not all evil. And because he saved Fox's life, he is considered to be more of a neutral antihero to the fans than a villain. But be that as it may, the fact remains that nothing has changed between them. In other words, Fox and Wolf are still and always will be rivals even though they seem to have respect for each other and have developed sort of a big brother/little brother relationship. But who knows? Probably in the next installment they'll end up fighting side by side with each other against another common enemy, seeing as they're sort of like friends now. Because I've seen goodness in him, it's quite obvious that deep underneath his cold and arrogant attitude, Wolf is really a good person with a big heart. Even if he denies it, there's no doubt that there is some good in him.

The drawing I made of Wolf O'Donnell in this picture is essentially the dominant macho pose he assumes in one of the official images from Starfox Assault, but I drew him in his Brawl outfit instead. Because as far as records go, I have to admit that I really love the awesome outfit that he was given in Brawl. In fact, Wolf's Brawl outfit is by far the best attire he's had yet. It looks similar to the outfit he wore in Assault and Command. But the differences are quite noticeable. Though he retains his electronic eye-piece, the rest of his outfit is completely unique. He wears a detailed blue jacket with buttons on the right side over black shirt, spikes on the shoulder pads and knee pads, long black gloves which extend past his elbows, colorful padded boots, a collar, a necklace, black pants, and a belt with a buckle shaped like a wolf's face. I gotta say with an attire like that, Wolf not only looks more badass, but I think it makes him look undoubtedly and absolutely sexy. In fact, it's no wonder why he has a considerable fanbase who admires him for his charm. And trust me; Wolf O'Donnell is one handsome dude. Not just because of his outfit, but also because of his magnetic draw on the fans. Heck, I always thought Wolf had a lot of charm even before he had his Brawl outfit. But even so, I can only hope that Nintendo will let him retain this outfit for newer Starfox games to come in the near future. On top of that, I also hope that Nintendo will one day explain his back-story as I believe Wolf's origin would be an interesting saga to engage on. Anyway, that's enough out of me. Hope you all enjoy.

Starfox, Wolf O'Donnell, is the property of Nintendo.

I think he would have looked good with orange or yellow eyes. Red is a bit generic, but I get the meaning it is supposed to send. of course. Orange and yellow could do that job, but with a bit more I dunno.. Mysrery to it. not just "Plain red I am evil". Yellow is a bit more wild, and kinda creepy, the same goes to orange, since wolf isn't all evil, as seen in Starfox Assault. //opinion

As for your art, I absolutely love his expression, you did a great job capturing "Wolf" with it. That arrogant smirk. Brilliant.

I think red eyes would be too generic, they're overused for villains I personally don't give a damn if he is portrayed as an antihero, because, to me; he will always be the villain! Wolf is raw, wild, powerful, charming, and most of all, should've been more evil! Hell, the word 'wolf' is an offensive word, to the best of my knowledge. Wolves are dangerous animals, and that's what's exciting about the great Lord O'Donnell. I do imagine him as being rather tall, so his Brawl outing surprised me as well. Even not considering the epic outfit he gained in Brawl, his personality is oddly appealing to me. Talking about his choice of clothing, I think he'd look better with a generic collar with lots of spikes.

His actions in Starfox Assault, were strange! I'd have loved if Wolf had became the main villain, instead of yet another antihero... I've had it up to here with antiheros in every game! But that is okay, he's still Wolf, and that's the main thing... I'm just glad he hasn't been ruined.

It might just be me, but I like the mystery of how he lost his left eye. Mystery is very appealing! You have obviously studied his anatomy for a long time, to produce such a good first drawing of him. It's great!

MDTartist83 In reply to MeisterWolf [2010-12-07 17:17:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, like I said; that's just my opinion. I don't really care if people agree or disagree with me about his eye color. All I'm saying is that I think he looked better when his eyes were red because red eyes makes a character look more intimidating and imposing. Not to mention it has that ability to strike fear into the hearts of those unfortunate to cross his path. I know it's generic, but it has a powerful affect to symbolize a character's firey temper and awesomeness. Purple eyes just doesn't look right to me because it kind of makes him look feminine. But again, that's just my opinion. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Besides, I don't let it bother me too much.

In my opinion, I think it's great that Wolf is more of an antihero than a villain nowadays. That makes him a little more three-dimensional than when he was first introduced in SF64. Because in his first appearance, he was just a flat character driven with only a single desire which is to kill Fox McCloud for reasons completely unknown to us. Though it's most likely due to a childhood grudge the two had together. but now that he's an antihero, Wolf has become more expandable and more intricate because although he's still Fox's enemy, he has a good side as well as an evil side, meaning that he has the capacity for both. True; wolves are dangerous if they're looking for food or if they feel threatened. But wolves are not as vicious as some people say they are. They really are quite majestic and intelligent animals.

I agree; Wolf's Brawl outfit is without a doubt one of the best and most epic attires he's had so far. I like just about everything about his outfit; the pants, the gloves, the boots, the jacket, the spiked shoulder pads and knee pads, ect. All makes for an overall thuggish and badass look. I love his personality two. Wolf is a very complex and intricate character who just leaves you thinking what makes him tick. Yeah; I actually found it quite surprising that Wolf and the other Starfox characters were about the size of children with their dwarf-like proportions as opposed to some of the other players in Brawl. In fact, they're pretty tiny compared to such characters like Samus, Solid Snake, Captain Falcon, and Ganandorf. Quite frankly, I never imagined Starfox characters being so tiny; I always imagined they'd be the size of normal people like you and me. But who knows? Maybe it depends on whose behind the character designs in certain games. Because if there's one thing I know; is that character designs may differ greatly depending on whose behind the artwork for the game.

It's not just you; I always found the mystery concerning how Wolf lost his left eye to be intriguing. And quite frankly, I always thought Wolf would have an interesting and engaging backstory for fans to enjoy should anyone make an effort to explore it one day. Oh, and thanks a lot for the kind words. Yeah; I put a lot of effort in this first drawing of him. Of course remembering all those details from his Brawl outfit can be tricky. But now that I've familiarized myself with it, drawing Wolf in this particular outfit should not prove too difficult next time. I'm planning on making more works of him, and I'm also planning on making a few hilarious short comics with him in it. Once again; thanks for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed.

I know what you mean about opinion. Purple eyes seem more "magical" to me. Personally, I find white eyes to be the most scary, but that may be due to some sleep paralysis and shadow people.... it hits home for me. I think most of it boils down to personal taste. I like bad guys that are androgynous, it explains most of it. I'm shallow in a sense.

I think I'll always consider wolves dangerous. You are right about the well-fed aspect, though. Reminds me of this ---> [link] I am not calling you a wolfaboo, but I think they are what lowered my opinion on wolves, they think wolves are the most amazing creatures on the planet...

Is English your first language? You sometimes get confused with "to", "too", and "two"... no offence intended... my spelling isn't perfect, and English is my first language.. failure there lol

You seem to study Wolf, and you leave insightful comments all over the site. I've enjoyed reading them, and I admit I've learned new facts about Wolf because of your input. I saw the coloured pic you did of him, as well, it's good too! I'm honestly surprised you haven't made a fansite or something similar... Wolf is a subject you'd get good grades on.

Sorry for the late reply. But I respect your perspective on the wolf (the animal). Besides, everyone has their own perception on those kinds of animals. And don't worry; I'm not insulted by what you meant when you shared me that link.

Yes; English is my first language. I've spoken it all my life. I guess I do get certain words confused. Oh well; nobody's perfect. I speak other languages two although not as much as I speak English. I also speak a little bit of Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin. But I'm still working on those though.

Thanks a lot for the kind words on my insight and knowlege of Wolf O'Donnell. So, you've been keeping an eye on me all over the site eh? Well, I'm actually surprised to know that you've learned from me about Wolf because of the info I added in this submission along with several comments I might have left in other deviations. Well, I could create a fansite although I have no such knowledge on how to do so. I know what I know basically. But thanks for the kind words. Means a lot to me. I agree; I'm sure I'd get good grades on Wolf if it were a school project.

Yeah. Wolf's Brawl outfit is similar to the outfit he wore in Assault, but the differences are quite noticable. And needless to say it's more detailed and more sophisticated two. True; it's never shown what kind of clothes he wore in SF2 or SF64, but many fans believe that he wore a brown trench coat over a black uniform with the same metalic boots that Team Starfox wore back in the day. Quite frankly, I like all of Wolf's attires. But I think I like his Brawl outfit the best.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! And can you believe this is my first time drawing Wolf?

Yeah. I guess so. Or maybe it's because I've seen him in his Brawl outfit numerous times before in the last two years since Brawl came out, that it's been imbedded into my psyche. And well, from the way it looks it seems like I've gotten all the details of his outfit quite accurately. Of course this did take me longer than how long it normally takes to do a single drawing. But yeah; this is my first drawing of him. I can hardly believe I even pulled this off. Sometimes I look at this pic and I go: "Wait a minute; did I draw that?"
