When you say liquid plastic, did you have a mold or something to put it on or did you shape it with your hands? (This is new to me, I'm trying to learn prop-making techniques.)

Yup, I made a mold with silicone and trowlable paste, then did a slush cast with liquid plastic. Basically it means while the plastic cured I rolled it around in the mold until it got hard. If you go onto smoothon.com, they have a lot of tutorials and basically sell everything you'd possibly need

BTW WHat is liquid plastic? Can I use to to make functional cosplay accessories? I've used paper clay but I'm no sculptor and it's hard to make things smooth enough sometimes.

Go onto smoothon.com, basically everything you'd ever need is there. Liquid plastic is a two part liquid that you mix together, and it heats up and becomes a solid. The great thing about it is that you can either make a solid piece out of a basic mold (like if you wanted to make a jewel or something), or you can make a hollow shape using a slush technique (rolling the plastic around in the mold until it dries). Then if anything turns out too thin, you can always add more plastic to it as long as you don't remove it from the mold.
I still love paper clay, it's a great material and is still fantastically useful, but may not be my favorite thing to make tiny parts.

Thank you for the advice! I will check out the info you gave me. I love all the work you've done on the masks btw. I made a Majora's Mask out of cardboard and craft foam and paper clay. It turned out really well. And was useable. But a simpler process like the liquid plastic sounds like a better option.

liquid plastic? is it some sort of resin? Did you cast it in a mold?

meanlilkitty In reply to ShinjusWorkshop [2012-11-18 07:40:37 +0000 UTC]

It's just plastic that comes in a two-part liquid that solidifies into a hard plastic. To make masks I use a slush-method of casting in a mold so I get a nice hollow shell

Thanks! So it works like resin. Probably it's some sort of polyester compound. So interesting learning about new materials!

It's a lot of fun, and so far more predictable than resin. I've had difficulty with it in the pass since my work area isn't temperature controlled XP If you go onto smoothon.com, they sell all sorts of materials and provide a lot of tutorials.

Oh, yeah, smoothon have lots of amazing stuff... too bad I need to drive to the neighbouring country to get materials from them ....
