Description Information about the picture

I have tried out a new paper for my pastels and I really had to get used to it but I think I like it. Too bad it's so expensive (about two euro per page....)

They are also pre-coloured... I bought a green one and a grey one...

Do you think I need to add a background? and if yes, what kind of background?

The title comes from the song: 'What Sarah Said' from the 'Death Cab For Cutie'. It's such a beautiful but also such a very sad song...

I like it! The only thing you might need to do for a background is some darkening under the horse's hooves to "ground" it, rather than leaving it floating. The color of the paper makes for a nice background, though, so I don't think you need any more!

Beautiful horse. Very nicely done!

Done with pastels? I could never do something like that with pastels, I never liked working with pastels. Mine would ended up with smugdes and finger prints all over it, and no clean lines.
I really like the real look to it. and looks like it has tuffs on it';s chin, and the nice shine coming from it's fur. has a really nice touch to it.

if you have an idea for the background yes add one, but I know it's tough coming up with a back ground.

I started out with the face, first the eye.

Than I maped out the shades and the highlights... After that it's just adding layer after layer. The beauty of pastels is that you can put a light colour over a dark colour. Or dark over light.

I do remember that was one good thing with them, but the ones that I could remember using they remind me too much like crayons because they don't really have a small point at the end like pens and pencils, so it was very hard in trying to do any details…

You can use a knife or something else which is sharp to sharpen the points.... just scratch a bit of at the end... it tip will become sharp

Wow, this is awesome!
Especially for pastels!

My brother got me some pastels a few years ago for christmas, I'll have to bust those out and see what I can do.

I think a soft forest background would be nice, slightly blurred without intense detail to keep the sense of movement in the image.

Love the pose!

You really should

If you do, I'd love to see the result

Ooh and the paper does do a lot! I've been using printing paper before, but the paper I used for this one works a lot nicer....

And I think you are right... I should add a background...

Well I just realized that they're oil, so not so great.

That, and they're just round sticks, basically.

Bah. I'd really like to get a Wacom Bamboo soon, then I'd actually have some art up since I spend a lot of time on/near my computer, hehe.

Doesn't help that the decent art I've been doing lately has been going to friends.

My favourite piece to date is a pencil drawing of a ball python head, which took up a whole page and I spent hours on, went straight to someone as a birthday present without being scanned or anything.

Perhaps I should get a picture of it. xD
