Description
I found this guy in our composter. And I'm glad I was finally able to photograph it, because it has escaped me at least twice in the past. It's Philonthus spinipes and it's one of the bigger rove beetles out there, being at least a centimeter long. You might be asking what was it doing in the composter. Well, it's a predator, so it was looking for snack, probably fly larvae.
Just a side note, after I took this photo I went outside and saw another one, or some similar looking Philonthus, which once again took off before I could photograph it. These guys are shy.
