Description ART101 Assignment 1
On a sheet of charcoal paper use compressed charcoal and erasers to create a reductive drawing, use scale and dramatic lighting to create a still life of glass and metal objects. Your major goal for this assignment is to create a definite mood through the scale of the subject on the page, contrast and clarity of detail, and atmospheric lighting. Try to achieve a hierarchy within foreground, middle ground, and background. Foreground objects should be sharper than background objects so that objects appear to advance and recede into space. This is a representational drawing, but you can also work with subtle changing textures, subtle lighting of focal points, and other inventive ideas to create a concept-based still life. Choosing meaningful reflective objects or including your own image reflected in the objects can add personal symbolism to this project.

This first assignment is for my teacher to see where our drawing levels are at. However, since I had her last semester, she knows what I'm capable of. And so...

First off, this isn't my best effort. With all the reductive charcoal drawings I did last semester, you'd think I work that hard again? Psh! But even so, I'm not the type to totally slack of. I did draw in the design on the glass, no?

In the background is the same metal bowl that can be seen in a previous drawing , in the middle ground is my Meeko glass (from Disney's Pocahontas), and in the middle/foreground is an ice cream scooper. Yes...I didn't have much still life to work with....Anyway, as usual, I didn't follow the scheme of making farther objects darker. I made an attempt to not make the glass too detailed, as can be seen from the blurry designs and text. My light source was my window. Wow, so creative and dramatic! Sarcasm aside, I made an attempt to accurately depict the various reflection (excluding the reflection of me).

...crap, just realized I forgot to add the highlights onto the table. I'll fix it shortly (as in, an hour or so).
[edit] I tried adding the reflected highlights on the table, but some areas weren't erasable. Lesson of the day: Don't spray too much workable fixative. [/edit]

At one point, I made an attempt to draw the wood grain texture of the table, which can be seen in a previous drawing . But it wasn't turning out right, so I blurred most of it out.

In all honest, I just grabbed various glass and metal objects from the kitchen and arranged various compositions without a thought to the mood or meaning. But then again, I usually apply meaning to my art while working on it. And so, the mood of the joy of being a kid (Meeko glass) and eating not-so-healthy food (ice cream scooper and whatever could be under the metal bowl). ^^

wooooooooooooooooooooah. that scoop is crazy.

the bowl doesn't stand out from the background - it looks fuzzy. and the shadow from the glass looks off, but I dunno how.
I'm not the greatest art critic. >___>

I think I would die if I had to draw the design on the glass. you have great patience.

The design on the glass actually didn't take much time, since there wasn't too much detail. The ice cream scooper, on the other hand, seemed like eternity to get done.
