Description September 5, 2012.

I finally got around to roughly designing these mythical beasts that I use in all sorts of stories. lol

Phoerons and Aerons are related species that diverged in their evolutionary paths so that the phoeron is more land-dwelling and using all its limbs for running/walking to hunt for prey, while the phoeron spends maybe 50% of its time in flight to chase down prey. They are long-lived species, and depending on their diet, can live for centuries. The average lifespan for a Phoeron or Aeron in the wild is 75 Earth years, and they reach sexual maturity at 10 Earth years.

They appear to be descended form a mix of both dragons and phoenixes (and are inspired by pterosaurs). They are intelligent, powerful creatures, and are often very aggressive in the wild. However, they are easily tamed if trained while young, and people have been able to use them as steeds to ride on and fly with. They are about the size of very large horses, but are probably half the weight because they are more wiry than muscled. The brute strength that they lack from being muscled is compensated by their high speed and quick reflexes. Both species adapt to their environment not only by feeding off the available prey, but also by absorbing or ingesting materials in the environment to aid with digestion and camouflage. The sclera (whites) of their eyes are usually a dark dusty grey, but their irises come in a variety of colours, usually matching their environments.

Phoreons are generally the hardier species, having their backs and tops of their limbs covered in hard scales instead of feathers (feathers are actually modified scales after all!). They are very fast and often hunt in packs, which is a frightening sight to behold, as their wiry frames and razor beaks and wings make them look like a moving wall of whirling blades. They are found throughout many environments that are rich in prey animals (pretty much anything they can kill and tear apart for meat). Their scale and feather colours often reflect the terrain they are in, and their bodies are often geared to resilience against whatever elements they are most bombarded with in the environment (e.g. in the desert, they have extra defense against heat and flame. In icy lands, they have resilience against cold and frost). They can be trained to be ridden on, much like horses, and make fierce steeds in wartime.

Aerons have long stretches of membrane wings that have a feather cover on the top side and have long tail feather strands to help direct their flight. They are usually very light coloured on their underside in order to blend in with the sky so that they cannot be spotted by their prey before they swoop down to attack. They are more solitary than their phoeron cousins, though they commit to monogamous pair bonds to hunt together and care for young. Aerons find it a little hard to walk on their two legs because their long, curved talons (which are great for grasping prey and carrying them off) often get in the way. They generally roost on rocky mountains, but will roost in very tall building sides as well. Their powerful talons allow them to roost and sleep confidently while hanging off the side of a cliff, and some have been seen to sleep upside-down, much like bats. They can be trained to be ridden on and can transport their riders through the air over vast distances.

Phoerons and aerons CAN be mated to produce hybrids (though they cannot fly or run as fast, but in general are hardier and more docile, and their beaks are more rounded like duck bills). The hybrid offspring are sterile and unable to reproduce further (much like horse + donkey = mule, and mules cannot breed). Phoeron-aeron hybrids are called "gumpons".

Where they appear in my stuff:
- Around Fafnr's galaxy, the Amit Archdom. Her knights ride them. They are more mana and energy-based due to the high level of it in the environment.
- In Breakers, they are the main steed units for Dual Knights (Phoeron-riding) and Aeron Knights (like pegasus units!). They come in many varieties, but most of them are quite hardy and loyal, as they have been bred and domesticated for centuries.
- I'll add them to Myriad Saga too! They take on a more metallic form due to the high level of mechanized creatures in the world. SO their scales often have a metallic sheen to them and they weigh a bit more than normal (though some varieties that come from more natural environments may not be as metallic).
- And they probably exist in any mythical universe I participate in. lol

The species are copyright to me, =Meibatsu .
If you wish to use them, please credit me. Thanks~!

Yeah.. they could probably tear a hole into you easy. >_> They pretty much are dragon/bird things, but most of them are patient if they are tamed from an early age.
