I know the month of #inktober is technically over but I intend to finish what I started! I didn’t mean to fall back but I’ve been pretty busy and the last few days I was down with a cold. Feeling much better now and getting back to drawing
So you’re probably wondering, what does a butterfly have to do with death? Well this was a rather difficult prompt for me to tackle and wanted to put more thought to it. This year I lost someone very close and dear to me and it’s also nearing my grandmother’s 6th year since her passing. I couldn’t bring myself to draw something dark and scary so I decided that I wanted to represent Death in a gentle and peaceful manner. Thanatos, the god of death in Greek mythology is often portrayed carrying a butterfly in his hand that is connected to the soul of the dead. Even in the Mexican traditional holiday ‘Day of the Dead’ monarch butterflies are believed to be the souls of deceased family members and loved ones who return home to participate in the celebration.
So with all these ideas in mind I knew what I needed to draw…
A beautiful soul fluttering towards the sky
