Ahh, Natto is smushed up beans. Deer are indeed in Nara too.
That sucks .__. There are other traditional foods ^-^ Vegetarian choices are very good over there!!!

Nice photo :].
I read all of these tips! I never knew that japanese people think itยดs disgusting to eat while youยดre walking in the streets o.o. XD
Do you know why they think so?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Meli-ichigo In reply to BenFreaky [2009-08-28 19:50:25 +0000 UTC]
They think this is disgusting because it just looks grubby, like someone who is homeless/hobo etc and, because it is disrespectful to the cooks or people who made the food! They put a lot of hard work and effort into preparing food. They believe we should honour the cooks, and in a way, I believe that now too.
Cooking is hard work!

(Yes, youยดre right! I canยดt cook XD)

....Gosh, I was a student exchange student in Osaka for 4 months. The hottest four months on my life, but by far also the funniest.
I am doing everything I can to get back there. >.<
(I miss Takoyaki... so incredibly much...but....Natto... that stuff is TOXIC)

Funny times? Hehehehe please tell! ^-^
I want to go back! A friend of mine will be going over there for a whole year!!!

I was there late April to early August. It was smoldering and I was miserable. And my host family noticed and went berserk. They bought me a Air Conditioner and a Refrigerator filled with icepops. Next time, I will prefer to suffer in silence.
AH, your friend gets to go for a whole year ??? I'm seriously jealous. Is she going under some program of on her own ? ^---^
As for stories... gosh. I did more there then I have done in YEARS of my life. I am homesick for a place that is not my home. Weird feeling. XD

I went to Japan last year, but only for ten days. XD It wasn't an exchange program, unfortunately, but I did get to go to some pretty fancy restaurants, since, I was there with my Step-dad on a business trip. And an old-style Japanese bar! XD Sake....!
Yeah, I clearly remember eating while walking down the street. It occurred to me while I was eating that I wasn't supposed to do that. XD I felt pretty embarrassed as a group of high school boys past us. Eeek!
I also got food poisoning... XP But Japan's really clean, so that isn't likely to happen to everyone. I never got to go to Osaka, though I really wanted to. (Come on, with the way they make it out to look in anime? Supposedly, everyone's tougher than the rest of Japan, they all go jump in the river when the Hanshin Tigers lose, and they all eat okonomiyaki. Who wouldn't want to go there!? XD )
I really wanna go on an exchange program!!! Grrr! Maybe in college... Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience! ^_^

Wo! Your so lucky! I'd love to go to Singapore with my Dad (he used to live there) AND MAN! old style is awesome. They hardly ever ID you -- 'cos they can't ask x3
Yeah. Me and my friend got sneered at when eating Mc Donalds, we decided to sneek it up to our hotel room, on the old western style fashion that we behave in xP >.<
Food Poisening? OMG. How?!
Osaka is beautiful <3 and bustling, the dialect is a little different there I hear, and nawww....anime emphasises everything, and shows hidden desires -- like, to be as outward and scary as the western civilisation (which isn't a good thing) whereas the Japanese are reserved, and respectful.
Exchange is a wonderful way to learn, I met the most lovely and caring family, with two wonderful daughters, the youngest held my hand a lot <3
I'm glad to share! It was a fun and interesting experience x3
omoshiroi desu!

I know, I know. I was just making fun of Osaka stereotypes. XD I actually know quite a bit about Japan. ^_^;
I'm going to be in Japanese 4 next year, so feel free to speak Japanese! (Though it seems you know much more about informal Japanese than I do, but that's what I want to get better at ^_^).

xP hehe I'm definitely sure you do ^-^ Awesome! I've just finished my pre-intermediate course, and am moving onto the intermediate in september 8D
Nawwah, in the comments of this work, I thought 'shitsureishimasu' was please sit down.
Its not xD especially as suwatte kudasai (kudasai being the request-word-in-polite-form) is a better use of words XD
so I suck. XD

Wh00ps XD
Well, I'm not sure about the rude part, but in my japanese classes, we watch videos, which include scenes of inviting people to sit down -- ohhhhh suwatte kudasai, that sounds right. I'm just starting the -te form right now in class xD I'll fix that then.
Himeji......that has the castle.
wh00ps x.x I think I mean't Miyajima.
Man, having re-read my comments, I musta been on something XDDD
Natto scares me x.x

Yeah, I'll never remember so many kanji xD
I think, I'm just very shy about speaking, but when I feel I know how to say something, I'll say it.
I used to have this obsession with saying how I'd like to travel to the moon because its my home.
Not that it is, there was a book about a moon princess that my teacher brought in for me. I've forgotten the title, but its a classic story.
Anime also gives an informal view on things, such as classmates who are good friends, and insults too. It can teach people who don't know about etiquette in such things. You can easily insult someone XD
The dubbed.......oh GOD. They are terrible. If the settings suit the language, i.e. English, then I'll watch it in English. Like Hellsing, I genuinely like it in both Japanese and English! Its set in England for a start x3 And the accents are surprisingly accurate.

dtownley1 In reply to Meli-ichigo [2008-04-10 15:14:07 +0000 UTC]
I actually feel the same way about speaking. You know, my mum said that when I was a kid, I didn't start talking until fairly late - she was certain I wasn't going to speak in front of people unless I knew how to do it right. I guess I'm the same now.
If I'm with people who only speak Japanese, then I'm more comfortable speaking Japanese. If I'm around people who speak Japanese and English, then I'm more reluctant to use Japanese. Not sure why. Most of these people I know who speak both, I've known since before I knew any Japanese, so English was always more natural.
You have a point on some of the dubbed ones. I've not watched Hellsing at all, so can't comment there. I'm surprised they used British accents though. I would have thought it would have all been in terrible American accents. I think Steamboy also had some good English acting in there. There was also another movie, where the original recording contained multiple languages - European characters spoke their native language, while Japanese characters obviously spoke Japanese. I forget the name, but I think it was another Vampire based movie.
Still, my belief is that if you are to watch any entertainment, it should be watched in its original language. If it's a German movie, watch it in German, if it's anime, probably better off in Japanese. The director of FLCL put it pretty well - that a character can lose their original essence through dubbing.

Meli-ichigo In reply to dtownley1 [2008-04-10 15:32:13 +0000 UTC]
Methinks with friends who speak both Japanese and English, English is more likely to be spoken.
I feel that way actually, because trying to speak something that isn't your mother tongue is more embarrassing because they know you can just speak English instead.
I try my best to always watch Anime in its original language, but I am always curious. Another terrible example of bad dubbing is the English version of Karin. The American accents are so incredibly strong its terrible. x.x I don't mind American accents. But dang.......seriously strong, especially as the man character doesn't have a strong voice anyway!
Dubbing does destroy some aspects of the character, like jokes they make. Some westerner's just wouldn't get it x3

Awesome.
I can give you some tips on the language, I'm only at the -pre-intermediate phase, and achieved one of the highest scores in an exam -- maybe thats good enough to give beginners tips.
You gotta' be passionate about it, I am. I really want to teach English there after I get my art degree. That won't be for a while yet though. x3

My daughter does some photography and I've found that many of her 'spur of the moment' shots to be as good or better than some shots that she took an hour to set up for.. so may be true of much in photography...
