Description I put this together this morning, intending, originally to post it on my blog, but I think it's better laid out this way. Which means I get to upload it here, so people can download it full size.

Please DO NOT repost this on other sites, redistribute it, etc. You may, however, link to it to your hearts content.

Provided, that is, you find it informative.

I painted this in Corel Painter, however, it should work just as well in Photoshop or whatever paint program you have, provided it works with layers and layer settings.

Please be aware: I paint eyes so often that it's like breathing for me. Sometimes I do things without even being aware that I've done it or how I did it... I tried to break everything down as simply as possible for this, but if you need clarification, don't hesitate to ask.

Which tool did you use for the starburst pattern? Could you elaborate more on doing the irises?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to SaigoKarasu [2008-06-26 14:33:37 +0000 UTC]

It's just a round brush, semi transparent, and you just kind of blob in the colors in that sort of a pattern.

How do you select and/or create skin tones from a single base color and which tools and methods do you use for hair?

That was so awesome to read! I don't do any digital painting or drawing, so it's amazing to me what you can do on the computer. I love watching your painting on youtube, but it goes so fast, it's hard to keep up. I enjoyed reading this to get an idea of what you do. Thanks for sharing!

So, you didn't lear how to do this somewhere, this is just kinda the best way you can describe how you do it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to Logovanni [2008-02-04 20:59:33 +0000 UTC]

I learned by studying other people's tutorials, and experimenting and practicing on my own. Which is, I suppose, the same way everyone learns how to do anything.

Logovanni In reply to MelissaFindley [2008-02-05 04:21:00 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Good job, then. You've done very well. I'm going to do a little bit of learning from you.

Funny, I love the hair even more than the eye^^ I think the tut is really well-done and informative (even though I don't use PC-coloration and such).
The most interesting thing though, in my opinion, is that I'd never have guessed how the whole face looks just from the eye! It coudl have been a guy you used as a reference
Anyways, it's cool to see a photo of such an amazing painter!
Thank you^^

very nice tutorial, good thing you explain the basics first, too many people don't know how the eye works and just start painting what they think it is.

great tut... especially the skin part I always had trouble with texture part. thankies
How big is your usual canvas?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MelissaFindley In reply to Aegils [2008-02-03 23:23:16 +0000 UTC]

Usually around 2400x3600 at 300 dpi

For the painting here I only used part of the canvas to paint the eye step by step, then cropped it and laid it out in Photoshop

not clumsiness... it's a common problem, and I'd always meant to do one of my own. You're possibly the third person in the last few days who has needed help with the same thing.
