True Katydids are relatives of grasshoppers and crickets. They grow over two inches long and are leaf-green in color.

Katydids have oval-shaped wings with lots of veins. They resemble leaves.

True Katydids live in forests, thickets, or fields with lots of shrubs or trees. Katydids spend most of their time at the tops of trees where most of the leaves are.

Usually katydids are heard, but not seen.

hehehehehehehehe My sister found one of these not too long ago.... she picked it up and it bit her. It was really funny. She got this look on her face that was pure horror at first and then halfway like an angry pouting child and halfway like a 'how dare you betray me' look, then she thew it back on the ground and stomped off.

Almost five years ago we had found our first katydid, and for some reason that we just couldn't fathom, he hung around in the same place in our yard for almost a full week! We named him Jared. ("he" might have been a 'her' but we didn't know how to tell so we just judged it as a him). Anyway, Jared let us pick him up and carry him around and never bit us.

Cool picture!

Yeah, we didn't know it'd bite either. My sister didn't think so, but it was SO funny
Lol, weather it bites or not, so long as it's not poisonous and it doesn't have a stinger, I say go ahead and play with it. It seems to me that the less afraid of a bug you are, the less it seems to bite... you know, at least in my experience. Crickets are a good example. I didn't even know they could bite, and I've been handling them for years... then my sister decides she wants to catch one, she's nervous and afraid it's going to bite, I tell her that I've never been bitten, then it bites her. It's like *facepalm*.

Have I ever told you that I love the icon you're using right now? Praying Mantis are BY FAR my all time favorite bug :3 In fact, you know how I said I've been handling crickets for years? that's because I have this bug-box that I often put a Mantis in (I leave the door of it open so it can get back out) but I like to go catch lots of crickets and stick them in the relativity enclosed space so I can watch the Mantis in action :3 Do you know how to tell Males from Females? Is there anything obvious? I'm always curious about them.......

Haha.... I'm not too sure what's the best way to tell between male and female, normally i see the abdomen areas. Females are thicker than males.
