Basil is very passionate, investing a lot of feelings into her opinions and work. Due to this she is hardworking and puts effort into what she is assigned so she can be proud of the results. Her passionate feelings also lead her to care about people deeply and often believe she is closer people than they do. Still, she wants the best for friends/ acquaintances. Assuming other people’s feelings have been a problem in the past, so now Basil does her best to be empathetic to see things from other people's perspective.
Basil’s hard work is comes from being all work and minimal play : she becomes anxious if idle for too long and needs something to set her mind to. If not busy, her mind drifts to memories of a better time. Her reminiscence takes hold easily when she doesn't pay attention. It shows as staring off into space or even tearing up. It’s not usually a big deal since she already cries often . Mostly because Basil puts her feelings into tears and not words, partially due to being easily offended.
After losing both parents at vulnerable times in her life, Basil was left craving a parental figure . She tries to appease older individuals and gain their guidance. For the same reasons, she is motivated by praise. Basil wants to do what others will approve of and likes it when people compliment her.
Basil takes things too seriously. Being both easily jealous (would very much like to be better than others, unhappy when someone -especially if they're younger- is better than her at a specialty) and easily offended (doesn’t really ‘get’ sarcasm or understand that being playfully called a “hoe” or “fucker” isn’t an insult; needs to work on handling criticism) is the price to pay for her hard work. Basil also comes off as rebellious because she wants to prove herself and often does things out of spite. Though she does her best to put on a “tough” facade, inside, Basil is uncomfortable all the time and can be embarrassed by small things. This is especially so when talking about feelings.
Since his mother was the only child, Basil’s father (Fuji) was the heir of an old confectioner’s family. However, he had eloped with a woman, Jailen, and was promptly disowned for his disobedience. For the first years of their lives together, it was something out of a shoujo manga’s epilogue. They had three children together: Hiro, Basil, and Ying Hui.
Then, Jailen left Hiro and their children behind when Basil was 6 to marry a different man. After, the Murakami's could barely keep their pleasant, upper-middle class lifestyle; however, at age 13 the company that Basil’s father worked became bankrupt and they had to move to the lower income part of town. At 15 years old, Basil was used to working part time while studying and finally came to terms to what had happened two years prior.
Her contentment ended after Leader +++ died later that year. Crime immediately spiked in around their neighborhood. At this time, Basil’s father (already a gun enthusiast as well as the nephew of a dojo owner) started to train his children to protect themselves. Basil’s mother had heard what happened and invited Basil’s older brother, Hiro, to work in their stepfather’s company. Hiro graduated and left for China a year later and even though he sent back money, Basil couldn’t help but feel thrown away again.
At 17, a car crashed into the bus stop she, Ying-hui, and her father were waiting at. Her father was immediately killed on impact while Basil lost her arm (alongside other minor injuries) and Ying-hui was paralyzed from the waist down. The most she could remember about that day was someone with an odd tattoo pulling them out of the wreck.
After a year and a half of rehabilitation, the first thing she did was visit her paternal family’s confectionary shop and her great uncle’s dojo. To her dismay, both had been demolished to build skyscrapers; yet due to the death of Leader +++, all that was left was broken wood and concrete .
Ying-hui and Basil live in the same apartment as before the accident. Ying-hui goes to a high school in a better part of town- the tuition is being paid by Hiro and an academic scholarship. Basil is also enrolled in school (albeit an online university) studying sound design, convinced by her elder brother that it was the most frugal option. She has a part time job doing sound and camera work for a web news/lifestyle show.
Basil wanted to join Shibui to help make Tokio feel safe like it did 5 years ago and be a part of a large family again. Part of her would also like to see a return of traditions like her family’s confectionaries. She heard the whereabouts of the gang from her journalist coworkers (after mentioning the tattoo and colors on the person who saved her from the wreck), then followed leads for months before finding the HQ. However, even after watching people who passed in and out of the HQ from a distance for a few days, Basil could not seem to pinpoint where Tetsuya was. Almost on the verge of giving up, Basil did not look where she was going on the way home with groceries and bumped into someone! When she looked up, she began crying from surprise, relief, and embarrassment. Basil blubbered out an apology and asked to join Shibui in between each sniff.
