it's almost 4 a.m and technically not day 6 anymore but worth it
this is my second try at inktober today which is why it's so late !
i wasn't happy with the first one at all, though i spent a few hours on it,
but finally, praise the pagan gods, i am satisfied

i was determined to do this beautiful creature justice though ~
the grass snake (Žaltys) is a 'household spirit' in Lithuanian mythology. they are a sacred animal of the sun and guardians of the home. my mum told me stories of how people used to keep them as 'pets' in the countryside, and just let them doze off by the stove, or in some special spot outside. they'd even give them little plates of milk, in an attempt to befriend the grass snake, believing it would bring good harvest and wealth.
we have some really beautiful folklore written about this gentle snake, most notably ''Eglė - The Queen of Serpents'' (which you can read here ;; eldermountaindreaming.com/2015… )
that story is also why i included the little crown as it's a common motif associated with the grass snake in the fairy tale

this summer i actually got a great glimpse at a little grass snake swimming among water lilies, it was wriggling about and making some really pretty shapes,
the black scales looked like liquid mercury in the sun ~ strange though that i only recalled that memory after i finished this ahah

i really hope you all enjoy this one !
i think i'm slowly moving towards a style that's more enjoyable and 'me' : ))
