I've mentioned it before, but i really like the membrane you've put between the feathers and the back, it adds a unique and interesting feel as it almost bridges the gap between Bat-like mammalian wings and feathered bird/reptilian wings. Β
So... here i am, over-thinking the subject of a third set of limbs (wings) once again, and i have a question to pose to you:
Where evolutionary (if your species are the result of evolution) does the third set of limbs come into play? and how does it affect other species?
you see, I personally have three possible branch off points for wing potential that doesn't affect all Tetrapods; Amphibians, Reptiles and Birds included (although how they even gained a third set is still unanswered). The furthest back for me is where the main Crown Mammals branch off as it allows them to lay eggs or even possibly carry young in a pouch (which is a kind of interesting idea but in practice probably wouldn't work well). the second possible branch off is Boreoeutheria, which lets me also create winged horses, cats & dogs but also means that Bats would need an overhaul. For me this is one of the best periods as mammals are hugely diversifying at this point due to the Dinosaurs just going extinct. Lastly, you could add the third limb as a Primate which means that the only species with three sets of limbs (or wings) can be humans or other closely related species.
I'm probably just overthinking the subject hugely but it's interesting to theorise the impact and to me helps me worldbuild a little... (Then again i'm thinking in the terms of if All humans had always had wings and how that one change influences how they interact with the world)

I really appreciate the color coding - I think it makes it easy to follow.

I love how accurate and perfectly layered these wings are <3

Nice work. My issue has always been with the sheer size of the pectorals, and the accompanying breastbone, that a humanoid would need to fly. Gotta make a magical excuse, or you end up drawing a distorted human, if you want to make a realistic flying human. Not too many people like realistic winged humanoids, lol! Nor realistic winged horses, either...

i'm still conflicted about putting the pectorals over the shoulder as picture above BUT THEY LOOK LIKE THEY SHOULD WORK MAYBE??? I find breast plates are a good alternative to keels if you are looking to preserve the human figure as much as possible, but sometimes its fun to have a huge hulking creature m'right?

Lol, yeah, breastplates as opposed to keels are good. But then I'd think you need insect-like wings, not feathers.Β
The pectorals would indeed work whichever way, though, since the strength and fibre density of any muscle is not dependent on its size. Rather like the miniscule drumsticks fleas have, propelling them so far --- it's composition that matters, not size.
HOWEVER: as I always tell myself when drawing unrealistic animals, you can find a variation on every rule in nature.

maybe so, but the anatomy has always felt wrong when I draw them. I'm horrible at drawing in general really, my skills are more with stories, but i always wanted to draw an angel once

Really happy with this. I hate wings on humans because of all the anatomy no.
But the shoulder and elongated pectoral muscles really seem to look nice and believable.

Wow this is so eye catching. The anatomy is great and the size of the wings are just right.
One small thing though.
From the current position, it looks like the "shoulder" joints of the wings are in the same level with ones of the arms. This may cause limited range of downward flappingΒ motion.
May be moving the wings up, or the arms own a bit will help.
Β
Still, loves your drawings!

mernolan In reply to Egaboot [2013-10-15 14:37:06 +0000 UTC]
oh yeah for sure - you'd have to move the arms around to make everything fit comfortably, I was focusing more on the muscle structure and just didn't incorporate that into these drawingsΒ
I HAVE SUPER OUTDATED REFERENCE THAT DOSE MENTION MOVING STUFF AROUND THOUGHΒ mernolan.deviantart.com/art/Wiβ¦
thank you for the comment anyways - always good to know that people are thinking these things through c:

Finally someone have done some research on how to attach a wing to a man. Bravo!
I so much hate when people mindlessly put those skinny little sticks on the back of their character. I wouldn't dare to hang a single atom on those wings, not to mention a whole person.
Your wings look anatomically correct and big and strong enough to lift a person. I like it ;]

Agreed! It also irritates me when there's no distinction between feathers -- primary, secondary, etc.
I was obsessed over this once, and it's great to see a decent approach to it. Don't know if it would fly, but it at least looks like it.
