Since the original Goddesses were based on the Norns of Norse mythology. I thought it would be cool to draw them as their counterparts in other mythologies, such as Greek, Egyptian, Russian, etc... this one is Hindu, if you couldn't tell. ^_~I had almost forgotten about this piece until someone commented on [link] . This was drawn and inked around the same time, almost three years ago. I based her on a particular Hindu goddess, but I can no longer remember which one. Maybe it was Lakshmi? I'm not sure. I also had versions of Urd and Skuld, but unfortunately they were never scanned, and I have *no* idea where the originals are after moving across the country.
Anyway, I totally forgot just how much *detail* I packed into this piece! All the pearls and jewelry and tassels... I love this drawing for the sheer level of intricacy, and also for the elegance I was able to give her.

I find this really ironic and beautiful because I do believe the original Belldandy's design, was more or less someone who at least looked Indian (If anyone has read the manga from the start, they will know what I mean).
If the whole Indian themed design for her had stayed up until the Belldandy we all know and love now, I think she'd look best with your design of Hindu Belldandy, great job!

You're right, she was very Indian-inspired at the beginning, and I always had a soft spot for that look. ^_^ That's why Hindu was one of the top 3 alternate versions of her I wanted to work on, and ultimately the only one that got inked. I'm glad you like the drawing!

Belldandy seems to be based more off of Amaterasu Omikami then VerΓ°andi. Everything from her nativity to the fact that she travails through mirrors are references to the sun goddess. The funny thing is that she also has a lot of similarities with Keiichi's mother, Takano, to the point that it almost seems that Kosuke Fujishima was suggesting that she too was/is a goddess.

Not really, the fact that Keiichi is both the main character and the hero of AMG seems to be a much bigger one according to FF.net. Hey, did you ever get the feeling that the fandom to a series that you liked was made up of idiots?
