The scar comes from a magical explosion he provoked while the Magister he belonged to was violent with Alton’s mother (a slave too, as you can imagine). Unfortunately, the explosion killed everyone in the room, except Alton who only got “marked” on the cheek.

Alton's mother was a slave and was being abused by their old master. Scared Alton lashed out with magic (the first time he ever used it) accidentally causing an explosion and killing his mother, his master and hurting himself. I think that's right, right?
