I came up with a backstory for Dash being a cyborg ninja:
After she was torn apart and killed by the Pegasus Device, Dr. Atmosphere, in a fit of madness, recovered Rajnbow Dash's remains and began experimenting on bringing her back. After several breakthroughs in cybernetic prostheses, he came up with a solution. With her head being the most intact part of her mangled mess of a carcass, Dr. Atmosphere removed her connected spine and skull and fitted it to a new cybernetic pegasus body. He then employed a powerful alicorn from Ponyville -- Twilight Sparkle, a friend of Dash's -- to use magic to bring the pegasus back.
When Dash was revived, she suffered a psychotic episode, killing Dr. Atmosphere. Twilight was only spared by the fractured mare's memories of the Mane Six resurfacing. Rainbow Dash was then hidden from the public by Twilight as the pegasus recovered and got adjusted to her new body. However, the only thing that came of that was a split personality -- Rainbow Dash, the old friend of Twilight's, and Dash the Deadly, the psychotic mare that ran the Rainbow Factory.
After the pegasus' nice personality took most of the control over her mind, Dash was reintroduced to the world by Twilight, and she rekindled her relationships with the Mane Six and her ex-nemesis Scootaloo. But Dash couldn't fit in right. Her black metal body made herself easily distinguishable from other ponies, and more often than not, the mare found herself the target of anti-cybernetics organizations. Her only hope -- her old dream of becoming a Wonderbolt -- was shattered because of her forced cybernetics. Dash was told that her cybernetic body gives her an unfair edge over other ponies in the business.
Sent into a depression, Dash became good friends with Cypher Trace, a fellow cyborg facing similar discrimination. Cypher and Dash knew each other before either were augmented, and as friends, they decided to try and find a place in Equestria. They did, among a specialized unit of the Equestrian Army called 'The Misfit Foals', along with a few shady characters. Dash became experienced with swordplay during her training, and became a cyborg ninja. Her body received more modifications to be better suited for military operations. She was given an extendable visor that acted as a HUD, and her eyes were altered to have a zoom function. She was considered to be the perfect cyborg.
However, post traumatic stress disorder finally caught up with her during an operation, and her Dash the Deadly persona resurfaced. She slaughtered her enemies with no remorse, even tearing through some with her bare hooves. She was only saved from going over the edge by Cypher, who projected a hologram of her old friends to make Rainbow Dash come back.
After several years and hundreds of spells, Rainbow Dash now can control DD as an anger that she can unleash when she pleases.

The one line that made me lose my sense of "taking the game seriously" was when Raiden and Monsoon talked about "the MEMES!". XD
