Description This is a depiction of the death of Enkidu in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was one of the earliest epics every recorded. Gilgamesh was the king of Uruk. He was an unruly bastard, raping people's wives and ruling his people as a tyrant. So the gods sent Enkidu, a wild man, to "tame" him. Enkidu was the only man in the world whose strength equalled that of Gilgamesh. The two fought, and when it became clear neither would win, they stopped fighting and became best friends. Together they had some adventures (which I may illustrate later on), but after angering the goddess Ishtar Enkidu was cursed with sickness and died.

The reason this story appeals to me is the profound same-sex affection. Gilgamesh mourns Enkidu's death as one would mourn a lover. And the episode is so traumatizing Gilgamesh embarks on an adventure to find immortality (he also finds the man who survived the great Deluge, known as Noah in Judeo-Christo-Islamic mythology).

So the story has homoerotic overtones. But were they actually lovers? Idunno. Don't really care. It's a beatiful story involving men loving one another, and whether that was in friendship or romance, the world needs more of it right now.

And as a gay man I can certainly appreciate it.

So yeah, I'm just learning digital painting, so feel free to criticize with technical advice.

Thanks!

I really like this one. I prefer the unnatural weight of Enkidu's body but because I like for mythic images to look a little staged. As far as the interpretation of eroticism: It's difficult sometimes to look into the past and see things as they were without adding our own baggage of interpretation. In the cases of physically intimate, non-sexual relationships between men (we Abrahamic sorts will think of David and Jonathan), it's easy to see eroticism since our society very often correlate intimacy with sex. Even when we see two close blood relatives being physically intimate we start suspecting incest. All that said, art is an alchemy of social elements. All we do is interpret and reinterpret the raw material handed to us by our social environment. We each own every single shared idea in human history and are free to augment and share them. Lastly, eroticism is a cool place for art because it often relies on the tension of vague implication. When we call something "erotic", it's usually different from calling it pornographic exactly because it isn't explicit; it doesn't have to be. That's what I responded to when I first read this epic and when I first saw this illustration. Well done, Eshto.

It's called platonic love. A relationship doesn't have to involve romance or eroticism to be beautiful.

Gilgamesh, the king of kings opened his mouth to speak to Enkidu:
"You've dropped your soap, friend!"
And great, terrible buttsex was made,
that caused the heavens to tremble!

we had to read this in yr 11, ,y teacher was really cool, and loved homoeroticism lol, she was the best teacher i had, then i got a gay teacher when she left, that i hated, it looks pretty good to me, not that i am any digital painting expert, i am lucky to be on here typing now, lol, i like it, and i like that you appreciate the tale, i did too.

I love the story for the same reasons you do. Today, in modern times, men can't express this level of affection anymore thanks to changes in culture and society. Maybe that's why it appeals to me so much.

Yeah, I kind of got the same feeling about their possibly-gay relationship while reading the epic. I guess we'll never really know for sure. Although that long ago, there probably was a very thin line between the "kinds of love" that we express today.

I belive they were lovers. They may or may not have engaged in the physical act of sex, but that alone dosn't make lovers.

This is a deviation worth a lot, I think. I'm glad you explained it like that, I hadn't heard this lore before. even if they were star crossed in terms aside from loving and affection it still is important.
