Description I was honored to be asked to photograph my good friends family just before the holidays... this is her husband and their new son Morgan...

not being very fluent in portraiture photography, comments are greatly appreciated...

EDIT: this is the adorable Morgan Coe Randall - the latest addition to my best friend 's amazing family... swing by and tell her how amazingly adorable her kids are!

I concur with "surrealswirls" comments on the photogragh. But she forgot the most important part....magnificent subjects! Yard remains unraked.

aww, I love them playing down in the leaves. This is really a great shot! It shows the intimacy between father and son, and I'm sure the parents will just love it!

I've been doing family portraiture professionally for about 3 years now, and this image definitely looks professional. Great composition, the depth of field really helps to focus the attention on the boys. You've got similar expressions, which is a key point in portraiture (people don't necessarily have to be smiling, as long as their expressions match each other). You've got great profiles too, the rule of thumb is show all of the second eye or none of it and you choose to show none of it, good job on that - no slivers of the second eye accidentally distracting from their profiles. The eye gazes are also following their noses (this rule does not apply to high fashion photography, but it is important in family portraiture). And their heads are close enough together to show intimacy - this is probably the most important thing to be aware of in portraiture, as people seem closer together in 3 dimensional life than they look on 2 dimensional photo paper. Beginning photographers often struggle with this discrepancy, but you have a natural eye for solving it because even though their heads are fairly far apart, they are connected by their arms, gazing at each other, and mirroring each other's body pose, so there is still an intimacy formed between them and they are not static.

oh wow! thank you very much! i didn't know any of that... portraiture is something i'm just starting to dabble in myself - and coming from a pro at it, is a sincere compliment!

you're off to a great start then!

Have you thought at all about photography as a career?

eventually... i'm in hotels right now, and i have a really fun/great job that lets me travel... so i'm content here for now. i make a little money every once in a while selling prints on here and doing photoshoots for some of my networked connections, and a wedding here and there, but right now, i'm good where i'm at... i'll spend some time fine tuning my art and then one day, open up a studio or so...

Lovely, warm image. I like the way the horizon emphasises the eye-line.
