I remember seeing some of Wayne Barlowe's work and he would put symbols over some of his demon's heads.

Yea. I'm a fan of his demon world work... Demon's Angels I think? He just did a new cover for I think a reprint. I actually used to do that sort of stuff as a kid.. it's just fun to give demons some sort of mystical, symbolic power... sometimes the shapes may be random, sometimes I might just tweak what I've researched from history
