Description
A flying fish before the flying fishes ... Potanichthys xingyiensis is interesting. It was part of an extinct family of actinopterygians that evolved a gliding strategy similar to the one we know in present day exocetids ... more than 200 Millions years ago !
I failed to represent it correctly here but apparently the preserved scales were around the caudal fin area only. I guess the lack of a full thick scaly cover gave them more mobility.
