Lol, they actually never really talk about it. After Great Mazinger starts, they just kinda mention that Koji stops piloting Mazinger and goes to America.
So it's kind of like he "just" missed him or something

Actually, that'd be good for an angsty remake of the Mazinger series.
Like, Dr. Kabuto is a cold, distant father who cares more about his super robots than his own family, sorta in the vein of Tem Ray & Gendo Ikari. They could have Koji blow up at ol' Dad after he finds out he faked his death & returned to train Tetsuya & work on Great Mazinger without even telling him.

I love the way you've drawn this, Tetsuya would be proud. I especially like the way Great seems to be looking right at us, saying "You'd better start running". Classic .

Well this is Great Mazinger. He's the older brother of Mazinger Z. Make sure you know which Mazinger he wants you to draw. 
The origional had the horns going straight out horizontally and not going up. And the chest fin was beefier and seperated into two peices. The Pilder (ship that plugs into the head) was also different and more bubbily.
