Using paint can make really great drawings and animations, just takes patience. There's always gimp, you can download that from the internet for free. It's sort of like photoshop.

To make the bg transparent, you make it a png with the each pixel has opacity or somethin. This is really good, too.

Pro tip; The binary tool makes 8 bit lines, kind of like in ms paint, so if you're more comfortable with using that than use it. It's really fun to animate with.
You can also use the want tool to erase all the exass colouring easily, the use the invert tool to stay in the lines (At the top)
I'll be glad to help to find all the useful tools in there.
