Born Ivo Robotnik, Dr. Eggman is a firm believer in the idea that “knowledge is power” — a sound philosophy that he has warped to mean “use knowledge to dominate others and control the world.”

Gifted with a brilliant mind, Eggman, inspired by his grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik, pursued science as his life’s ambition. Throughout his youth, he placed first in every school and local science fair he’d ever attended, and proudly displays his awards in his house, alongside his “Brat of the Year” plaque he was awarded when he was in kindergarten. Ironically, these immature tendencies didn’t completely dissipate with age: he’s still a very conceited man with a staunch “my way or the highway” attitude about doing things, and he often dishes out verbal and physical abuse on his robot underlings when they disappoint him. He is especially fond of using psychological torture in the form of stuff like forcing Scratch and Grounder to watch CONGO on loop for twenty-four hours.

Eggman’s goal is simple: to take over Mobius. He has the technological resources to stake out on that goal—the versatile Eggmobile, legions of animal-powered robots called badniks, airborne battleships, and deathtrap-laden strongholds. That said, only one obstacle has routinely foiled his efforts to expand his “Eggman Empire”, Sonic the Hedgehog. The catalyst of their ongoing feud has never fully been identified, but they have definitely been enemies since before the comic started.
