Description I took to drawing some Pongo sketches this morning and yesterday evening. Two of them came out rather ugly, so I erased them in Photoshop.

A model sheet of Pongo was used for reference.

Very true. I can't remember if I deliberately changed his ears so that they were spotted, or if I just forgot. Ha-ha. In any case, I'll have to watch out for that next time. Thanks for reminding me!

aw Pongo! I love all the expressions, very nicely drawn
I was just curious and forgive me for asking, but could you possibly tell me what you did to cleanse the background on photoshop? I hate to ask, I feel like thats annoying but whenever I upload sketches the background is always a bit dingy looking and I dont know how to clean it enough without covering up my picture!
Im sorry again, I feel like I should be simply enjoying your wonderful sketches rather than pestering you for your secrets

Mitch-el In reply to accordionpunk [2011-01-15 03:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

Cleansing the background in Photoshop can be a fairly easy or difficult process, depending on how smudged the paper is when you scan it in. Generally, though, it's simple enough to do. Here are two ways I clean (and darken) my images*:

1. Open up Photoshop and then open up the image you wish to cleanse.
2. Go to "Image" > "Adjustments" > "Levels".
3. Underneath the "Input Levels" box, click and drag the little arrows to change the brightness and contrast of both the image and the background.
4. Click "OK" when finished.

Optional:

1. Go to "Image" > "Adjustments" > "Brightness/Contrast...".
2. Use the "Brightness/Contrast" scroll bars to change how dark or light you want the image to be.
3. Click "OK" when you're finished.

---------------

I hope that this information is of some assistance to you!

A good way to gain more knowledge of Photoshop is to simply play around with the program. Explore it and discover new and hidden treasures while tampering with your drawing!

By the way, don't ever feel like you're annoying me. I absolutely love helping out my friends, even if I'm a little late lending a hand (for that, I apologize). Besides, I think that artists should share their secrets, for if they don't... how else will such interesting knowledge get passed on? If ya' care, then share!

You have a wonderful day now!

*Take into account that I use Photoshop CS2 when touching up my images. The location of certain tools may differ from one version of Photoshop to another, so keep in mind which program you're using.

Ah, thank you so so much for your time! This helped me loads and now I cant wait to get some of my sketches up! Photoshop just seems to enjoy challenging me and whenever I think we're going to get along, it pulls up some little trick to get me frustrated! I still have yet to figure out how to scan several sketches from a few pages in my sketchbook and put them onto one page in photoshop; it seems to be an ongoing problem but I'll keep trying
Again, thank you for the reply! It means so much to have my questions answered! oh, and dont even worry about being a little late, artists are busy

You're most welcome!

Photoshop can seem a little tricky at first, but once you get used to it... it's easy enough to understand. That said, I wish you all the best in getting to know it better, and in handling the scanner.

Have fun playing with the program!

References were referred to, but, yep, I did use a pen. You should try sketching with this tool more often! It really does help you strengthen your drawing skills, since you can't erase what you put down on the paper and, therefore, are forced to try to nail the drawing the first time around. Believe me, it'll help.

Thanks, red!

LOL, how ironic! I'm currently wearing a t-shirt that has a character sheet of Pongo on it, and - from the looks of it - it might be the same sheet you're referencing to.

Mitch-el In reply to FaithFirefly [2009-01-10 01:27:10 +0000 UTC]

Ha! You know what, I think I know which t-shirt you're refering to, as I used to work at a Disney Store....

I think you're right: It's the same character sheet. Heh. Pretty cool.

I almost got to work at the Disney Store and I would've loved to, but when they closed down a third of their stores nationwide, the one closest to our house got canned. The next one is about a half hour away.

But I at least did get to find that shirt during the closeout sale.

Mitch-el In reply to FaithFirefly [2009-01-13 01:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Don't you hate that? It's one of the best stores out there and they had to close about... a hundred of them nation-wide. It's ridiculous....

Ha-ha. Well, I'm glad that you nabbed it!

Cool, dude! I have that DVD now, as well. (I watched almost all the bonus features in one day due to boredom. *snigger*)

Ha-ha. Well, stop it and draw then! I do that all the time, man. I'll be watching Ratatouille or something and all of a sudden I get this... overwhelming urge to draw, and the only way I can pacify it is by whipping out my sketchbook. Do what ya' love to do!
