Nothing worse than working horrendously long hours at obscure times. I'm pretty sure these to know what I'm talking about WAAAAY better than I do.
I want to thank assamite1 for being so patient with me while I worked my way though this :') So here we have Dr. Hawthorne (wolf) and Dr. Cerval (Gazelle) meeting up for a brief moment of "respite" from the hectic hours at the Hospital. Dr. Cerval has just finished his shift and it shows, and Dr. Hawthorne is dreading the start of his. This is awesome work, Winter! assamite1 will definitely be happy with this. If I remember correctly, this is from the first chapter where he describes Dave and Doug meeting at the parking lot. Doug isn't happy that he's losing a smoking partner as Dave has promised his mate, Carol, that he'll be giving up smoking. He's not doing it cold turkey (hehehe...cold turkey for a predator XD ) but cutting down little by little till he's down to a cigarette a day.
The scene is exactly as I pictured it. Hats off to you!

In the clinic, yes completely banned, but there's almost always some kind of "smoker's corner" located near the building (or just off the property). In this case, it's out across the parking lot. Depending on your location, there may be a buffer zone where smoking is prohibited within a certain distance of an entrance. Something like 10m is common.

I've always found it odd that some doctors and nurses smoke during their breaks when they know smoking is one of the causes of lung cancer...

It's an addiction, and in this case, both physicians use it for stress relief. The clinic where they work isn't a happy place.
The wolf does quit smoking as part of the story.

My mom used to work as an ICU nurse. Long hours and changing shifts made her an exhausted parent, especially since Dad was out of town often.
