Description From the little book of beauty secrets. RC demonstrates "How to wear a little black dress" -- for maximum effectiveness: over your shoulder.

Now that we're done staring at her butt... The lighting on this was a medium softbox to camera 45 degrees right, and a small softbox aimed at the backdrop. Notice how much crisper the lighting on this shot is, compared to the results that I usually get with my huge octodome!! I was shooting in Olaf's studio and decided that I'd get a little more dramatic with my lights, and went a bit too far. Remember - the size of the light doesn't effect its intensity, but affects the size of the reflection on the subject. Smaller lights like these make smaller, harder reflection-points on the model's skin as well as more-defined edges in the shadows. Also, instead of using a gridded spot to light the backdrop, since I used a softbox, you can see a bit of spill/light on her shadowed side. It's a subtle effect that a lot of photographers use to add depth to the scene by picking up a little bit of the edges of the subject. Normally, that's not how I do it.

Mesmerizing. You have a lot of Rael C pics, does she realize how great her backside is? Your image of her in a maid outfit is my favorite, any more of that set?

I cannot this without commenting and I cannot comment without praising that ass because it's lovely, but beyond that, she has a fantastic form. Her butt melts perfectly into her thighs and they are shaped in wonderfully perfect proportion. The lighting is indeed on the money and accentuates her body wherever it falls. Perfect job.

Oh, and that is the BEST place for that dress next to the bedside floor.

"the size of the light doesn't effect its intensity, but affects the size of the reflection on the subject". Do you mean, the size of the softbox? or the light inside the sofbox... I got confused at that part... I udnerstand that as much tight the light's cone is, much intense the light, more hard, less spilled, more contrasty... I have a E-TTL Flash to get some practice. It's not the same shotting with a flash set at 17mm than set to 105mm. The angle is tighter at more mm, just like the lenses and all that what means (more intense, harder contrasts, etc).

Awaiting reply!!!

mjranum In reply to xAgNO3x [2008-09-08 04:38:47 +0000 UTC]

The size of the physical surface of the light.

And, no, it's not about the intensity - a very large collimated light (in terms of the frontal surface of the light) would have the same large specular highlights as I get with my big octodome. Even a very diffused point light (consider the sun) looks "sharp" where it reflects, because the angle is made tight (nearly parallel) by distance. That's why people who want the kind of look I get, use big lights close up.

Yeah, I can see it... More surface of the light, less shinny and crispy reflections, wider surface, softer shine, less crispy... Thanks God I went into 3D for almost one year!!!

For another example - the old "Lithium picnic" look was two umbrellas at a distance from the subject. You get these nice hard tight reflections. It's the exact opposite of my typical look. (Nowadays he's doing different stuff 'cuz he finally bought some big light boxes...)
