Description I'm trying to make the transition from oils to acrylics. This is my first stab at them... Sort of. I've used them before, but not exclusively.

Acrylics of illustration board, 11x15".

Hah, I've actually moved on to watercolors since them... Don't dig acrylics that much. Thanks for the comments!

I know it is what I wanted to say was that I have a shirt with the same print the kimono has.

First stab at just using acrylics, you say? Well, you've done an amazing job at it!

I saw this first on your website, but had to come here to post a comment. I love all the details you included here: the flowers, the katana, even that little bit of blood on her cheek.

Beautiful! So how did you find working just in acrylics? You've done a fantastic job with them

MJWilliam In reply to Elfin-Grrl [2010-08-07 18:21:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Toni! I like them. So far the only complaint I have is that the paper I was working on was absorbing them way too fast (it was a hot press illustration board). I'm going to experiment with different surfaces, this sexy thing being the first: [link] We'll see what happens!

Oooo gesso board, very nice! I can't seem to get them here in the uk, it has to be home made jobs! Let me know how you get on. I use hot press illustration board and when using oil on them I prime both sides a few times to get a lovely less-absorbent surface. You might be able to use some gloss acrylic medium to prime your illustration board with, giving a lovely slidey surface for your acrylics. I'm sure the gesso board will work wonderfully. Look forward to seeing the results

There are lots of things that can help acrylics, far as I know... Someone just recommended a medium that slows down the drying time. Trial and error time!

Wonderful work ~ adore oils for their many splendid qualities but hate them also for some of the same reasons I luv em, I found the transition easier by using some of the mediums that give you more open time for blending your acrylics like ~ Liquitex slow-dri blending gel

Bang up job on the quality of your colors

You said it... I love oils, and I hate oils. Anyway, thank you for the comment, the fave, and the tip, I'll definitely try that gel.

Thank you, Kat! Yes, they do dry fast, but that can also be a disadvantage, you have to work really fast, especially covering a large area.
