Description New drawing dedicated to the Beijing Olympics. I'm chinese myself so it means alot that it was held in China. I pretty much was glued to the tv watching China perform. It didn't matter what event it was or if we won or lost. I was addicted and found myself cheering if we won a medal!

Of course I was very impressed with the artistic gymnastics so this was the main part of my drawing. I decided to focus on the female gymnasts as I haven't done many drawings with female full body postures. Usually it's male basketball players or martial artists.

I only wanted to draw mid air body postures which were very difficult. The outfits were highly detailed, facial expressions and tricky body postures like doing the splits or being mid air upside down.

I originally was going to color every gymnast using normal colors. But I felt that each pose would not stand out so the decision was to have each gymnast a different color apart from the centre gymnast.

I've never done a frame for any of my drawings so I thought I should try one for this. I came across a newspaper which had a small pattern. I decided to use that for every corner adding my own touches on the sides. That frame took ages to finish! My fingers were in pain adding all the details and dark shaded areas!

There was still space to do more inside the frame around the gymnasts so I added varied moments from the opening ceremony.

Photo taken using digi cam. It seems like the colors light blue and green don't turn out too well after I've taken a picture. There's certain details not visible unless you see the actual drawing which I do find annoying but there's nothing I can do about that.

I have mixed feelings with how this drawing looks. I don't think it turned out how I wanted it to and maybe I might have done too much on it. But I'm done with it now so I have to move on to the next drawing.

A4 size paper.
Completed in around 4 weeks. Really long hours!
Color ball point pens and felt tip pen markers.
Full view is recommended.

its finally here!! ^^
one truly beautiful piece! love all the details and attention you've given to it
and the touch of pointillism on the background pictures. what did you use for those? pens?
works very nicely... and particularly on the olympic rings

Thanks mate!
Yes I used pens for the background pics. Using a mix of lines to shade and dots to fade out into the paper.
Well I'm not too happy with how it turned out. Maybe I done too much on it. I'm wondering should I have kept it more simple. I'll know next time I guess.

Wonderful work,& very vibrant colors that just add more excitement to this piece! ^^

it's well known that the Asian females are the best in gymnastics

Yes and I also think the USA have some of the best female gymnasts.

Dawnaie In reply to MLBOA [2008-10-09 14:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Anytime, Man
I disagree a little ,, it requires specific physical potentials=like most of Asians females have small bones/figures, it’s their natural look, which helps them a lot, but rarely you find that with American females & other females too, but still I can't say that it's a rule

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MLBOA In reply to Dawnaie [2008-10-09 15:43:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah american females do look more muscular! It's just that in gymnastics the main competition for China does seem to be the USA. China unfortunately didn't win all the gold medals in the female competition. USA won afew so they have to be pretty good.

Yeah ,& Romania & Russia are usually the best at it , but I guess it wasn't their year

I suppose luck also plays a big part like having a good landing or not falling over.

Sure, Man

I'm doing great, wondering what/who to draw next - got many ideas + I love that time of the year, makes me feel so awake!!

How are you?

MLBOA In reply to paulineaubey [2008-10-06 14:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Let's see, how about a half body or a full person drawing. Might be interesting to see how you tackle that.

I'm ok but the weather is getting really wet and cold!

paulineaubey In reply to MLBOA [2008-10-07 09:20:40 +0000 UTC]

Half body could be nice... and full person boring
I always draw on the same size of paper (24/32 cm)and wouldn't like to draw a tiny face that much - did you vote on my poll?
Here it isn't cold yet (still almost 20 degrees!) and my flat is well heated - it's the first year I won't be freezing at home during the winter since I left my parents' place !

MLBOA In reply to paulineaubey [2008-10-07 09:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha! Yeah tiny faces can be pretty tricky to draw! I noticed your poll but decided I should just leave a comment on what you could decide to draw next!

You are so lucky having such nice weather!

paulineaubey In reply to MLBOA [2008-10-07 09:48:25 +0000 UTC]

Good idea !
Indeed we are, but I like fresh weather too - as long as it doesn't contaminate my flat too much

MLBOA In reply to paulineaubey [2008-10-07 13:20:38 +0000 UTC]

A pity about the full person drawing as it would have been interesting to see you try one! Maybe one day on bigger paper!

paulineaubey In reply to MLBOA [2008-10-07 13:25:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, maybe - I'd need a few months to complete such a piece

Funny you ask me, because I didn't until recently - I honestly thought about a strawberry drawing (not joking!), because this fruit just looks perfect to me

Amazing! I never got to see the Olympics which highly disappointed me.... But seeing this picture helps. The poses are all amazing, I just love the arts of flexing one's body, they are so beautiful. You should /really/ draw contortionists at some point I think. Anyways, onto a proper comment.

The anatomy is wonderful, I love the shading of the muscles on all of them. I like the beautiful patterns on their clothing and way they are all different colours. I think the way you made each her own colour was a wonderful idea. I love the motion and flow of the entire piece too. The frame is excellent, I think it was a wonderful choice for this image.

More than like it. I love it. All those poses are amazing. You always choose the best poses, no matter how difficult it'll be to draw them and that makes your drawings all the more spectacular. Trying something like this would scare the hell out of me. This is great. I'm considering whether this is my fave of the drawings you've done so far.

To be honest I thought I done too much on this drawing. There was always a stopping point but I just kept going adding things. I agree it also scared the hell out of me! But I have taken afew risks with many drawings this year so I had to do the same with this one. Hearing your comments makes me feel like it was worth it.

Aya-87 In reply to MLBOA [2008-09-29 17:59:43 +0000 UTC]

It definately was. Just look at the result. I don't think it's too much. All you did matches and that's the great part. You never seem to overdo. You are one of the bravest artists I know. You take risks. You try new stuff, which can be quite scary.

yeah, there's just one face left, but I can't find the time to do it. I'm not really happy with how it turned out, but I'm happy I tried this. It's definately something I'm going to try more
