Description A quick little painting exercise in drawing small and painting fast, featuring Dr. Arlan Azhrel from Sarah Ash’s “Moths to a Flame”.

Dr. Azhrel’s glossy hair is described several times over the course of the novel, as is his horrifically scarred face . I'm quite fond of both. And since I recently reread “Moths to a Flame”, I can say with great certainty that the man-tension flying between Lai and Arlan Azhrel rivals the tension between Lai and Ymarys. Which is to say: there is some serious business going on there, kiddos.

-Watercolor and gouache on bristol paper, adjustments in Photoshop.

The poor man - the texture of his face is incredible, though! The scarring looks amazing!

How'd you manage to do the white dots?

White gouache! >.< I sort of go crazy with the solatter technique sometimes, but I just love doing it!

"Quick little painting" Ha! That's the most gorgeous quick little painting I've ever seen.

I especially love the tones in his hair and the background color texture. LOVE THOSE WHITE DOTS. I don't think I will ever fall out of love with those beautiful white dots you've got. Mmmmmm.

It really is a little painting! >.< 5x7 inches!

Those little white dots really liven up a painting, don't they? I wonder of anyone is getting sick of them! XD

Oh hey, a horribly scarred character that doesn't just look like they have a really bad sunburn. Very nice indeed. Also, props to that glossy hair, what's not to love.

Do those bright spots of white look as bright in real life as they do in the scan? I've always had trouble doing stuff like that with traditional media. Gouache and acrylic are NOT AS OPAQUE AS I HOPE sometimes.

When I do lighting adjustments in photoshop, my goal is to make the file look as close to the actual painting as possible (My scanner has a horrible habit or making colors look muted x.x ). And while I would like to say NO, THE WHITE IS THAT BRIGHT IN REAL LIFE I PROMISE!, the luminosity if probably due to photoshop >.<

The white gouache looks pretty bright to me in real life (I had to go pull it out for comparison!), but I think that photoshop is the cause for their luminous appearance here.

Sweeet! I love that almost nebulous background in the upper right. That is beautiful.

I too greatly enjoy his scars, especially the part that cuts through his lip and changes the expression. Mmmm. Always drawn to disfigured characters, probably because its an open invitation to guess about their past. What do the little figures buried in the background represent? And are his eyes actually red? Cuz that would be AWESOME.

Also- thanks for the * I guess I'll have to scan some stuff now, won't I?

The little figures are supposed to be the silhouettes of months (Like the one in the foreground). x.x Moths....TO A FLAME!

He eyes were actually red in the story though. They were brown, I believe. I made them red here because of the gloooow of the flames! and because it looks cool.

Yeah! STUFF!

I love the man-love.

The colors were pretty fun to mix up. Who know you oculd get such a nice violet from mixing alizarin crimson and payne's grey @,@ THE MORE YOU KNOW.

shiny hair and scars
The scars are definitely my favourite, they look like they could be touched and are not-sexified which is awesome <3
(How do you make the white dots?)
(And which Sarah Ash book should I read first? 8))

MNat In reply to theOvercoat [2010-12-28 04:51:03 +0000 UTC]

The white spots are gouache!

NOW: the question of which book you should begin with is indeed a complex one! My favorite of Sarah Ash's novels is "Songspinners", which is a single novel.

It is, however, more difficult to find "Songspinners" than the Tears of Artamon trilogy ("Lord of Snow and Shadows", "Prisoner of the Iron Tower", "Children of the Serpent Gate"). The trilogy was my introduction to her work, and certainly got me hooked on her books.@.@ So I suppose its a matter of which you would prefer: single novel or trilogy?

I found Songspinners on eBay ^^ I thought it's better to start with something small, then if I get hooked I can get the trilogy as well 8)

@,@ YAY! YOU FOUND IT! Songspinners is my favorite Sarah Ash novel, anyways @,@ I hope you enjoy!

Oh, that's beautiful. The background really compliments the portrait as well.

Long hair, facial scars and man-tension? I'm in. Why must you keep drawing interesting characters from awesome stuff I have to hunt down?

New-Vogue-Ravyn In reply to MNat [2010-12-27 12:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's partly working. I'll have three Sarah Ash books but the reading of them may be somewhat delayed, on account of SHEER VOLUME of books that need to be read. It's a disease.

MNat In reply to New-Vogue-Ravyn [2010-12-28 03:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you too collect books with the intent of reading them in the future!I have a shelf of "needs to be read" books. A friend of mine just keeps them in HEAPING PILES on her bedroom floor.

New-Vogue-Ravyn In reply to MNat [2010-12-28 14:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I do. I have two mattress-high piles by my bed, one shelf double-filled and a huge tower by my doorframe that reaches to the lightswitch. Some of those books have been here for years, poor things. And I still get books out of the library... >_>

Amazoing work!
