Description European Brown Hare.

I stroked a wild one yesterday. Was walking the dog in the stubble fields and came across an adult one crouching inches from my feet. Knelt down and said hello (because that's what you do when you encounter a wild animal - strike up a conversation).

Ah, we have plenty of the cotton tale rabbits here. Very skittish and quick to run.
Nicely done!

Hmm. There were a lot of them around the dirt roads last summer. Haven't seen as many lately though.

MO-ffie In reply to ComradeK [2012-08-24 23:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes? An off year for them... What species?
There were lots here in the fields in spring as usual. Then most of the summer they all disappear, only to re-emerge during harvest and they bolt in all directions as you walk through the fields. Adorable things!

Snowshoe hare. They're especially cyclical in their population. And the lynx tend to follow suit.

Ah yes. I've read about the very specific lynx-hare relationship in Canada.

I saw a dead one near the street today. His head was smashed.
But this picture is wonderful. And I like hares. Especially their eyes.

Aww, poor thing! Seems quite rare to see hares caught out by cars. It's usually rabbits.
Thank you! I love hare eyes! They look like hawk eyes.
