High Resolution image of Gunblade V2
**15th JULY EDIT 2008**
Re-rendered the image with higher AA for less jagged edges. Removed the silly watermarking and the noobish glow. Except from that, everything else is the same. I hope you like the new version

Popidge wrote a nice concept explaination of the gunblade:

"Gunblades don't actually fire projectiles.
When the user pulls the trigger, it sends a shockwave down the blade, causing it to vibrate rapidly which increases it's damage potential.
(which is why, in the game, if you pull the trigger at the right time during an attack or limit break, you do more damage)"

I think I will take a break from Gunblades from now, however I have plans to make more of it later So stay put!

How...just how do you use the gun? I have always been curious as to how Squall/Leon used this weapon in battle. By the way, I freaking love this weapon!

That one is THE BEST gunblade render I've ever seen, if some company would produce metal gunblades taking this render as reference I would buy a life sized one fore sure.

The quality is astonishing, really good job.

OmfG, that is freakin' amazing!!!
Do you have any plans to do more weapons in the future?

And is there any way I can pique your interest in a big project of mine? I could really use your help!

Looks excellent! You've got the appearance of the gunblade damn near perfect, maybe the blade is just a little short? looks great anyways!

I disagree on the operation of the gunblade however. The original B&W picture clearly shows bullets in the cartridges, and in game descriptions lead me to firmly belive that the gunblade does in fact fire bullets. (The idea being that you combine the wounding effects of both sword and gun in one.)

mogcaiz In reply to Wintercross [2011-04-14 13:38:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm aware of the cartridges and I don't deny that the gunblade relies on ammunition for maximum potential as a weapon. Hence why it also has a chamber for the ammo.
However not anywhere in the game do you see an actual projectile coming out from the blade at any point. Not even a fire muzzle from any bullet exit (because there is none).
On the other hand, you only see the gunblade being treated as a sword 100% of the time.

"Fire bullets" in FF8's Gunblade term simply means it sends a forceful shock wave through the blade for a more damaging impact upon striking.

The actual image of the gunblade has bullets in the cartridge. If it had no bullet, then the cartridge would have a flat end like a shotgun shell, or a blank round [link]

Also, Irvine's gun, and pretty much all the hand-help firearms don't display bullets when they fire, rather they play an animation, then an explosion-like effect plays on the enemy. So saying you don't see bullets fire out is redundant.

In the world of FF8, large monsters a prevelent, and the gunblade is attributed as an old weapon (Laguna states he hasn't used one of these 'old things' since training, also this is during filming of a movie about a Knight fighting a dragon)
My belife from in game sources (weapon mags, npc comments and situations) lead me to belive it fires bullets to combine the power of a gun and a sword. No, it can't be used as a projectile weapon because it's too unwieldly to sniper people, the effect is that as you cut into an oponent, you can inflict a gunshot wound aswell as a sword wound.

This makes even more sense with the idea of large monsters that a regular sword wound might not cause much injury to.

I take in game information prior to anything said on a wiki. Wiki's can be edited by anyone. The game is permenantly imprinted upon my disk, and cannot change.

mogcaiz In reply to Wintercross [2011-05-02 22:00:44 +0000 UTC]

In all honesty, I think you shift away from the fact that this is a game as it does not care about accuracy to the tiniest details*. Such as why they use bullets and not shells/blanks? But the answer in this case is simply because it wouldn't match the design of a revolver, unless if it was a shotgunblade. Which it is not.

Does it says in game that the gunblade is too unwieldy to use it as a projectile weapon, if it fired any projectiles at all? I believe the simple fact that you never see it used as a gun, like irvine's gun, throughout the WHOLE game, should be proof enough that the gunblade, is in fact, just a sword and cannot fire projectiles. But its enhanced with similar features where you can load ammunition into it for better damage efficiency.

The game is permanently printed on my disk as well, and I also take in game information prior, but I leave the interpretation of it to the experts who dedicate their time and research based on game facts they find. Which takes me to wiki, which have concluded it does not fire projectiles.

Since the wiki can be edited by anyone, then you also know that its been written by gamers and fans who in majority believes that it cannot fire based on the hard found facts available from the game. Hence why it states it does not fire any projectiles. If there was even a small minority who have any valid point that the gunblade is capable of firing projectiles, I believe it would been at least have been mentioned as an confirmed debated article, simply because its how wiki works.
But please provide to me the source/mags where it is clearly written or you see the gunblade used as a projectile weapon from long range. I'm open to change my description and comply to you if its proven.

----

*To give you a scale of how many ignored details there are in the game just watch this review: [link] (the guy is exaggerating, but he got lots of valid points) FF8 probably have the most broken storyline of all FF games. And since FF8 is only a game, and not a law of physics book: its allowed to take a step from reality to make their game world work, including the tiny details such as weapon effectiveness versus large monsters. If the the game should make sense at all, then why do we see t-rexes in game?

This definitely deserves a DD. You've got a way with the shading.

Say, would you mind if I use it as a reference? I've been working on a custom gunblade for some time now, but it's not finished yet. I could even email the jpeg preview to you if you like. It's just that I need to figure out how to do the shading for the gun handle. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Would you permit me to use your amazing work as a reference for a resin cast cosplay prop I am working on??
P.S. what is the final poly count?? That is just plain gorgeous work. Well done.
Also, what model prog. are you using??

Of course :') That's what it is for
I dont rememeber the count, but without the smoothing, its not that heavily polyfied xP

Everything is made in 3Dsmax and After Effects

Too cool.
I have been messing around with the free xsiMod tool and am totally addicted to 3d modeling now. Even when it's not necessary I find myself modeling props I intend to fabricate, just to see them turn in 3d lol. Did you buy 3dsmax and after effects??

I will keep you update on the prop too. Thanks again.
Great work!!
