Only in the Winter do I get this close. In the summer they are very skittish

Ah, the winter seems to 'calm' many birds down. Do people also feed the herons where you live? I know our Grey herons (almost exactly the same as your Great blues) sometimes live in the cities, and they have grown incredibly tame. They'll walk right into snackbars to eat bits of fastfood from the bins, and some people feed them chicken drumsticks, so they're accustomed to coming really close to people there.

Generally people do not feed our herons - though this year I did supplement the juvenile toward the end of the winter with sardines - but only at the end when he wasn't doing so well - as soon as the water opened I stopped - he needs to remain wild

Good to hear you helped this guy through the last rough bits - is he still doing okay now? And I totally agree, best to leave wild birdies be wild!
