I don't know if I could consider this part of the light-hearted series I've been doing, though I incorporated many of the same techniques. This is The Unicorn, or Lady Amalthea, from The Last Unicorn, by Peter S Beagle.

Gosh I'm speechless... you captured the horror of an immortal inprisoned in an ageing human body so well. Thank you

Old comment is old, but here's a quote from the book to clarify things.Β

The context: A wizard just turned the last unicorn in the world into a mortal human woman. The unicorn is terrified and repulsed by her new human body and is trying to walk on only two legs.

"For a moment she turned in a circle, staring at her hands, which she held high and useless, close to her breast. She bobbed and shambled like an ape doing a trick, and her face was the silly, bewildered face of a joker's victim. And yet she could make no move that was not beautiful. Her trapped terror was more lovely than any joy that Molly had ever seen, and that was the most terrible thing about it."

Read the book, or watch the movie (both are fantastic). You will never look at unicorns the same way ever again.

I love this, it emulsifies the pain the Unicorn/Amalthea feels once she has been transformed.

How very dark and...horrifying. I was telling another artist earlier about how the unicorn's transformation wasn't only a change in form, but a death for both forms at once. She died as a unicorn and in time her human body would also die.

i like this pic cos its so dark and creepy in the movie they just show her wigging out about it but there must have been a bit in the book when the four legged unicorn had to get used to walking on only two feet. you show that terror in her eyes without even showng her face

I love how you captured the unicorn's sheer terror at being transformed into a human. Like the book, your painting portrays this as a very dark moment, when the immortal unicorn gets her first bitter taste of mortality and weakness. She crawls around on the floor like an injured beast, trying to get used to her new limbs and completely different body structure. She looks clumsy and confused and afraid, but her movements are beautiful in their own raw and frightening way, as if the unicorn in her lingers still.

Forgive the long comment, but your picture really moved me. That's what great art does to people.

To expand, I think this is exactly what looks so amazing here - the figure is technically clearly recognisable as human, but you still feel as if you're looking at something animal and alien like an iguana or a jackal. Also, the rough painting style really makes it work...And the indistinguishable face and silhouetted arm are also particularly great touches.... Just like how the figure is creeping along the ground, as if it's sniffing... And the red/black split of the background.... Really, this picture is amazing. O.O

Whoa. That's certainly an original take on the character... Love the somewhat gruesome and surrealistic and animalistic feel of the picture....

This is cool, it feels like what she might have looked like if instead of crying she'd just been absolutely pissed/freaked out when she turned into a human.
