My problem with mermen is that, while they're often very attractive, there's no biological way for them to have human genitalia without switching the halves, but then they have a fish head and that's not attractive in its own way. Also, human/merperson relationships are just logically impossible unless the human is a lifeguard (or some sort of aquatic job, anyway) and even then they'd be difficult.
