Description
The typical floorplan for a Machiya ( 町屋 / 町家 ; an Edo-Era Japanese Townhouse (and shop);
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machiya ), specifically a Machiya in Nara.
Machiya had the nickname of "Eel Beds", because of their long, thing floorplans, especially as they're terraced.
Typically, at the back of the Machiya, there is a Kura (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kura_(st… ), a storehouse (and something of a status-symbol as you had to rich-enough to build one).
At the front of the Machiya is the sliding doors, earthen-floor Doma (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minka#Fa… /
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genkan )--here extending into the Kitchen--and the Misenoma (shop space), if the Machiya also doubles as the owner's shop and business. Next is the Itanoma, while the shop space is open to customers, the Itanoma is only for family and guests, and as-such it has a wooden floor instead of Tatami mats (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatami ), and where the stairs up to the first (& second) floor(s) from the ground floor. Next is the Daidoku (dining room) and the Daidokoro (kitchen space), which spans the rest of the length of the Machiya, has a double (or triple) heighted ceiling, and where the Machiya's Kamado (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamado ) is located. Next is the Okunoma, tatami-floored inner-rooms for family and privileged guests. This is the end of the residence-space, complete with an Engawa (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engawa ), a wooden deck, open to the Machiya's Tsubo-niwa (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsubo-ni… ), small, internal outdoor garden/courtyard space. There'll also be bathhouse, outhouse and storage space. After this, there'll be some floorspace and the aforementioned Kura (storehouse), and a back-entrance.
