It's probably been over a decade since I've drawn any serious Sailor Moon fanart, and for those unaware I was/am a HUGE fan of the series. Sailor Moon is what inspired me to take drawing seriously - with it's beautiful style (especially Naoko Takeuchi's work in the manga) and characters... I could go on forever on how it effected my life but I'll spare you all.

The theme for this contest is to draw characters from the series doing "normal" things - like shopping or cleaning, etc. As I was looking over the other already submitted entries I found that many of them were pretty outrageous in context! Some are pretty clever, but others just made me think "They would never do something like that!". Perhaps that might work in their favor though, since being creative is part of the contest scoring. However, I wanted to draw something that would feel genuine. Something you could look at and think "This is something the characters would do" as opposed to "What a wacky situation!". I also wanted to reflect the time period a little bit and add little touches here and there to make it charming and identifiable to fans.

So I came up with the idea to have Usagi (Serena), Mamoru (Darien) and Chibi-Usa (Rini) watching a late night movie together at Mamoru's apartment. To me, sitting cozily on a couch with your loved ones is really nice... and thinking back to when I was a kid and falling asleep on my mom or dad's lap, surrounded by the night with only the light of the TV glowing on us... it's just very comforting, and I wanted to express that here. It's such a family moment. And I really feel that it's something the characters might do together.

(As a side note - when I asked my friend Evey after I had already drawn the sketch if in Japan people even watch movies together like this she kinda said "not really, but sometimes people will get together to watch dramas!"... so I guess this is pretty American in conception, but Japanese in intention. DX )

Anyway. Since it's Mamoru's apartment I figured his place would be very simplistic looking with plain walls and not too many decorations - which is fine, I didn't want to make a cluttered background that would distract from the characters. I drew an older model TV since Sailor Moon kinda took place somewhere in the early 90s (what's sad is I used my own TV as a model..... I have a huge "last of its kind" fat TV ._.; )

Evey also told me that in Japan they don't really eat popcorn like we do while watching movies, so instead she suggested a bag of chips. XD I made it look super happy, lol.

I also labeled the chip bag and Mamoru's shirt with "Crown" after the Crown Arcade in the series (I think it's also the name of some stores and cafes too).

SO YEAH! WOOHOO! This took a few days to complete.
