I mainly put this together for me so I didn't have to keep sifting through piles of paper, but I thought I'd upload it here just to show people that I am drawing!
Please, any advice or comments you have are much appreciated!This is - as any Tamora Pierce fan out there will know from the title - Niklaren Goldeye, Niko for short, from the Circle of Magic series of books. I'm putting together a full character design for him for #TortallComicsProject and this is a collection of the better sketches I've done so far. Basically there's lots of his face, with a few different expressions, and some full body shots for clothes design, and a couple of sketches I did for elements of his costume (his dagger and belt purse).
Um, I should probably mention that his original face design is quite influenced by Tulio from Dreamworks' Road to Eldorado (which is an amazing film, go watch it if you haven't yet) so some of the face sketches may look familiar

It's Niko!
I like your concept of him (mostly 'cuz I loved Tulio from Road to Eldorado). He's one of my favorites from those books. Tris is probably my most favorite. I love people who can control the weather.

Aww, yeah, I always adored Niko, so creating a character design for him is a weird mix of total enjoyment and love, and a vague undercurrent of ... well, not stress, but something like that. A vague sort of tension, like I have to get him perfect, you know?
Weather control is pretty amazing, although I always preferred earth and fire magic, myself 
...ALSO. I TOTALLY DIDN'T REALISE YOU'D READ THESE BOOKS. THIS IS SOOOO COOOL!

I love those books and all of the characters. I have a special love for the cool adult characters.
Most fantasy readers I've met only know about the Tortall books, if anything. So it's actually pretty awesome for me that you like them, too.

LOL! I know, he was meant to just be a basis for the design, 'cause he has the right shaped face for the Niko in my head, and his hair's almost right too. But Niko ended up looking basically the same... like an older Tulio or something

I love all the little hidden jokes that I SO did not get when I was a kid... "Holy SHIP!"
And the whole Tulio/Cher thing. What, her name isn't Cher. Hmm. But I can't remember what her name is so for now it is Cher.

INORITE. So many jokes like that... That's why Dreamworks is amazing - not that Disney isn't - but it's like a naughtier version of Disney...

... But actually, if I'm honest, I never really liked Chel once she actually went with them. 'Cause it was always like she was going to come between what was possibly the most epic bromance of all time. D8 I mean, like, regardless of the fact that Miguel decided to go with them and all, there's no way their dynamic could stay the same with her around as well. GRRR. And then when I rewatched it later, I started to kind of ship the boys together, so ...
So yeah, in my head canon, she dumps Tulio (or they break up in a friendly way, whatever) when they get back to Spain. I don't mind her being their friend, 'cause she is pretty cool in herself, BUT SHE JUST CAN'T BE WITH TULIO. WHAT ABOUT MIGUEL???

Hahahahahahaha! I knew it was CHE- SOMETHING! Nearly correct. And I can't seem to watch ANY movie these days without making the two main characters gay in my head. And then I start noticing little vague stuff that MAYBE COULD MEAN IT'S TRUE BUT PROBABLY NOT... and of course that just confirms it
Chel was a bit... welll.. enthusiastic? I can't believe I didn't notice all the naughty little jokes when I was a bit younger. Rewatching it was HILARIOUS!

And yeah, I think I'm developing a style, and I'm definitely getting more confident at just drawing rather than thinking of how I want it to look while I do. If that makes sense. But with these, I'm not entirely sure how much of it is me and how much is Dreamworks, lol, since I keep thinking of Tulio from El Dorado!
