Species: Common Wombat (Wombat)
Latin name: Vombatus Ursinus
Originates from the cooler and better-watered parts of southern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, and in mountain districts as far north as the south of Queensland.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…Also known as the Coarse-Haired or Bare-Nosed Wombat, it can be divided into three subspecies though their distinctness is somewhat uncertain.
…Though one of the three still existing species of Wombats – along with the Northern and Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombats – it is actually the only one in the genus Vombatus.
…As one of their other name suggests, they have a notable bare nose.
…Common Wombats ae solitary, territorial species, and each Wombats has an established range in which it lives and feeds. In this area, they’ll dig a tunnel system which becomes their burrow. Many Wombats will live in the same burrow, and will live there their whole lifespan unless forced out.
…They are often nocturnal.
